It's like being an actor. Yeah, some are rich. Most have to have a day job for supplemental income.

Same with poets. Damn. Doesn't sound promising. My granddaughter's attending Dennison University and is taking creative writing. She wants to be a writer / author after she graduates. We were hoping that she would have went into the medical field like my daughter and her husband did.

Suggest she go into medical field first, and write in her spare time.

Wait, you have a granddaughter in college? But you look like 30 in your avatar lol (or maybe that's not you in your avatar?)

Suggest she go into medical field first, and write in her spare time. Yup. That's definitely the better idea, we thought. We suggested that but she shrugged it off. She was was the top valedictorian in her high school and it's not so easy to get into Dennison, especially getting the founders scholarship that she did, and to go for creative writing? Hopefully she'll change her mind and follow her parents and my wife into the medical field.

-Teresa Thank you Tres! Yup. That's me. I get that alot from people. The avatar pic is from last Summer. I guess I look a bit younger than I actually am. I'm 63. Most everyone usually assumes me to be in my 40s.

I would not change a damned thing about what I do with my life. Money comes and goes, material things come and go. What is important to me is being happy. I have written nearly 900 poems in 30 years and I might die dead broke. But I do know that i wouldn't have done any of that without the support of my late mother. It was because of her unwavering support I have written some great poems even if not all of them are.
But this is the thing about America I hate. Your attitude is actually pessimistic "Damn doesn't sound promising".
This is what theism teaches you. Chase unrealistic utopias.
Saying "Most wont" isn't a moral judgment but a simple statement of fact in math. The higher up you go in any field, art, sports, music, or business, the fewer spots there are and the more competition there is. Most people, if lucky, can manage to pay their bills and save some money. Nobody should begrudge those who do get to the top, but I do hate your attitude that if you don't get to the top that somehow you have failed "Doesn't sound promising.'
There are very few Poes or Plaths, and for every guy who makes it into the NFL there are millions more who wont get past the high school or college level. For every billionaire there are millions more who will just spend their lives as an employee and not a business owner.
I do get sick of being accused of being anti wealth or anti private sector for pointing out reality. If someone does beat the odds great, but right now we need to be more concerned with worker stability and less concerned with rich actors, rich sports stars, rich musicians and especially not rich CEOs.
Making it isn't what I object to. Selling bullshit utopias with no pragmatism of "better have something to fall back onto" is what I have a problem with.
The world will always have plenty of rich people, but the world needs now to focus on the stability of more humans.

It's like being an actor. Yeah, some are rich. Most have to have a day job for supplemental income.
A few things:
1. It's like any other profession. If you're shit at it and not willing to put in the time to build up reputation/client base, you will be poor. Being poor isn't an aspect of being a writer. It's an aspect of being an unambitious or untalented writer. I suppose it can also come from an unwillingness to do the paying jobs.
2. It isn't a choice between being rich or poor. There's a comfortable area right in the middle.
3. I don't know if it's because I deal with other professional writers all the time, but I don't know any who have a "day job" for supplemental income. However, you do have to write shit you don't feel like writing for an income and write the stuff you want to write in your spare time until you build up enough of a presence to write the stuff you feel like writing all the time.
It's all about putting in the work. Sure, I made shit in my twenties when I started this. Now, I only make shit when I take time off for vacation or illness because being self-employed doesn't come with sick leave.
