Yes, people want to sin and not feel guilty, so the don't believe and then rationalize their lack of belief.

I've never been religious and I've never said "I'm going to sin today", primarily because the concept of "sin" is a construct of the church to insure that suckers keep giving them money.

In general, people believe or don't due to matters of the heart. They then use their head to justify their desired conclusion.

Afraid of hell...which you go to for sinning. So, yeah, they're trying not to believe so they can sin comfortably. And most will get there. God generally doesn't fight them forever.

Matt 19

Jesus notes that man was created at the beginning - not after billions of years.

Jesus refers to the flood as a historical event.

I appreciate your trying but I'm not seeing how any of this explicitly constitutes a warrant from God to read the bible literally.  Both of the parts I bolded can be taken either allegorically or literally, just as any piece of writing can depending on the intent of the writer.  You see them as evidence of explicit instruction because you already assume that is the way to read the bible.  Do you have any quotes that directly address the issue of how one is to read the bible?
