Which is religion wins the prize for the most mindblowingly, bat-shitterymost of all?

You know me, Mr. Milktoast Atheist.  Always looking for a good believer.  I've compared them to needles in haystacks, very rare.  But there are some religions from which it is simply impossible to imagine an intelligent, reflective, modern thinking individual emerging.  Knowing how much we all love a poll .. here you go!

I couldn't choose between the one that seems like a synthesis of the bible and D.C. comics or the one that was actually written by a sci fi author, Mormonism and Scientology.  There are other worthy contenders but for my money these are the most intrinsically weird of the lot.

You know theists should be able to name some too.  But maybe they're afraid to chuck a rock given the house they live in?

I'd have to submit that the Jains belong at or close to the top of the list. They are the most extreme example of letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, not to mention the ultimately selfish motive underpinning their entire practice.

If it is just the bigger religions then Scientology has to be the winner for my money, followed closely by Mormonism. They are both just so obviously crap it is hard to believe anybody could take them seriously.

If the smaller cults are in the mix then most of them are certainly right up there. People like Jim Jones and David Koresh and Applewhite and Sun Myung Moon may have been charismatic individuals but to see them as anything but self-aggrandizing con artists or delusional fools takes willful blindness.

I went with Mormonism. Let's face it: Christianity by itself is batshit crazy. Mormonism takes that and adds an entire other layer on top of it equal to the lunacy of the base religion. You have to seriously turn away from reality to buy into that shit.

Westboro Baptist Church takes the prize on this question. The simple fact that they willingly attack grieving families with protests and disgusting signs about how much "God hates fags", at the funerals of our deceased armed forces members is truly disgusting.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who cares to claim the term is welcome to it.  Think of Jesus as a nice guy? Fine.  Think the bible is your contract with God?  You're in.  Just like the chicken served after service at the pot luck?  You'll do.  The only unchristian Christian is the one that questions the credentials of another.

I think you missed a few religions. I'll think carefully about my vote. It's so hard to decide. Judaism can be quite crazy and that's not on the list. Or there is the crazy fact that Sikhs would rather wear their religious headgear (Dastar) than be protected with hard hats on construction sites.

All of this for me depends on individual sect and geography and time period in history, so it depends who what and when as far as most shitty.
