Only the humans do - and they make up a lot of excuses why it is. They do this for THEIR convenience. It' s cheap and easy.
I' ve seen it done - en mass - by a farmer. With a burlap sack for restraint - and a carpet knife.

Yeah, that's fucking disgusting.
I've been advised to have my cat spayed because the risk of infection outweighs the risk of surgery. Otherwise, I wouldn't have her spayed. She's indoors, and I don't care about heats. Professional animal doctors seem to think it's a good idea. It'll be done in a clean, safe environment. What you describe certainly is barbaric.
