I prefer being an atheist Jehova's Witness (despite never having been a theist one in the first place or having any relations to them).
The worst you can get is eternal non-existence. Precisely what you get if they're wrong. The downside is that the victory conditions are nearly impossible to meet because the spots on the guest list for heaven are full. 
Let's weigh the pros and cons of hell and heaven.
Heaven  ray all day,play harps and feed the ego of a megalomaniacal god,sing Hosannah for fucking eternity,raise your hands in worship and adoration,bow the knew and thank god forever for saving you.Hell: Dance,meet hot babes,fornicate for an eternity,party eternally,have no one to be accountable to or worship. I choose hell!! God can stuff his heaven up his all powerful vainglorious ass.

Going by the popular depictions, you're right.
The more theological ideas would be that hell is eternal suffering while heaven is eternal bliss. Of course the second sounds nicer, as you're guaranteed to be pleased, regardless of your earthly preferences. The only problem for me is that eternal bliss sounds pretty boring, which contradicts the "eternity" of that bliss. And if the blissfulness can't get boring that means you're obviously not able to think straight, so it's more like being on drugs than anything else -- which is definitely NOT what I would consider a worthwhile reason to live forever. Just because you won't care, doesn't make it worthwhile.
Even if hell was eternal torture I would select it over heaven any day.I would not want to spend eternity worshipping a tyrant and fanning his ego.I would rather spend my time in the lake of fire cursing him out for eternity.

My cursing is always funny. You'd see me floating by in a river of fire saying "You stupid maggot brained, fish faced prick of a tyrant, Murderer of children, tornado causing, garlic breath, worm eating shit for brains." I'd be saying these kinda things all the time down there. Hell won't be that bad with me around to lighten things.

all the cool people are in hell, i'd rather surround myself with people who have the will to pick out evil and choose not to follow it despite the consicquences. then people who have neither the will nor intelligence to notice that their religion is vile.
if you think about it Hitler is prolly in heaven right now 0_o sense he was a strong catholic.
it is not the religious authorities of the world that judge but god alone regarding what he enjoys the most, his ego getting full recognition wherever he goes and for whatever he wants to do which is always doing nothing by everythings as god is a hudge fake and is not to be true, actually god hates truth, because it limits him he prefers the opposite by far, to limit any absolute truth without respecting any reality of it infront of him than to limit himself moves or reality, actually god enjoy feeling being unlimited as the truth by limiting the truth that provide him everything

Atheists tend to look at hell as a big joke. Since in our view of reality there is no such place, Only in the mind of the delusional who have become slaves to their imagination. God, devil, heaven and hell are all concepts of imagination. This is why it's viewed as a joke.
