Abusive sports fans. 0P
In the past couple of weeks NBA fans have been ejected from the venue for throwing things at the players and even spitting on them. I agree, there is no excuse for that kind of shit. Now, unruly fans are not a new thing. Even fights between fans, or fights at sports bars piss me off. I have never understood why any adult thinks it is ok to fight over a game. The idiots who do this are not fighting the Nazis, it is just a game.

I once went to Philly at their old stadium for a Washington Eagles playoff game. I was the only Washington fan in the rowdiest section. On the kickoff, we got the ball and made long run to start the game. I cheered, and the next thing I knew I had bottles and food thrown at me. Another time at a bar, a Cowboy fan overheard me talking to the guy next to me about a crappy play Dallas made, and he wanted to start a fight with me. I wasn't even trying to piss anyone off, just commenting on the play.

I am fine with friendly trash talk too. But to commit an act of violence over a sporting event is just to me insane. Be it at a stadium or bar, security/owner, has every right to toss you out, or even have police arrest them.

No one who hasn’t participated in (or at least seen), a good, old-fashioned football riot can truly grasp the subtle nuance and societal value of sport-related violence. Spitting at players, picking fights in bars - that’s kiddie stuff. Try turning over a few cars or setting fire to the Council hall. THAT’S commitment.

Simple times, but they were good fun.

No, it is all kiddy stuff. We have bullshit sports riots here too, after college football games, hockey games, ect ect. I'd only agree that European and South American soccer fans are at the top of the riot chain regarding sports. Still stupid to me regardless of nation or sport.  Just like the old Philly Stadium, the new Eagles Stadium also has a judge on site every game to arraign disorderly conduct and assault charges.

None of rioting or fighting over any sporting event makes sense to me. Sports are not a life or death situation and should never be treated as such.

While nobody likes riots, I'd say social unrest because police or government are abusing people, that is not desirable either, but far more understandable. Riots after a sporting event, especially after a win, make even less sense.

I find nothing funny about injuring another human over something that isn't life or death. There is nothing glamorous about it at all. Both the players and the fans need to be good sports, of all sports worldwide. Someone will win, someone will lose, but the players and fans are not fighting a real war like WW1 or WW2. Religious tribalism, or even political tribalism in our species is bad enough. But I'd never consider hitting or injuring a Cowboy fan being a Washington fan myself. I'd also never consider trashing businesses or any property if Washington wins or loses.

So, when West Ham lose to Tottenham Hotspurs, I’m NOT supposed beat Tottenham supporters with a chain? Fuck that.

If you are a WW2 soldier and kill a Nazi, I am with you. If you punch a rival sporting fan, sorry, if you instigate a sports fight, you deserve to be arrested. If you destroy public or private property, win or lose, you also deserve to be arrested.

I have often at sports bars, shared a table with Washington rivals, such as Eagles or Cowboys or Giants. I hate it when Washington looses to any of them. But the fans and even the players are not like worrying about North Korea, or Stalin. I love nothing more than sharing a table with a rival fan, win or loose, share a pitcher of beer with them, and friendly trash talk, like "Take that" when we make a good play, or "Eat pocket lint" when their team gets one up on mine. Silly stuff like that.

Ok, I can see your point. But I’m still allowed to light people on fire if my team doesn’t make the World Badminton Finals, right?

If I lose at Yahtzee, I am entitled to nuke the winner.

An aside. My late mother, as I may have mentioned in other threads, was always hyper competitive in sports. She actually never told me my entire life the extent of her Highschool or College sports participation. She played HS and college basketball and field hockey and soccer. She hated losing. But she was also a poor sport too. Regardless of a team game in an official setting, just between friends or family she hated losing board games. The funny thing, looking back at it now, she never reacted, at least within my eyesight, to losing to her adult peers, friends, co workers, in the same way she reacted to the rare times, very rare times, she lost to me, her son.

But as much as she huffed and puffed and stormed away losing to her son, the rare times she lost to me, she never would have reacted like sports fans do to strangers they don't know.

I think recent poor behavior among NBA fans reflects the general decline of civility in the US.
