The two letter nickname would be BJ Hunnicut. But he was not from the northern west coast.  He was from California.  Which doesn't happen to be northern...even on the west coast.

You got the character name right. But the episode where he first arrives to replace Trapper he divulges his prior history before being called to the war. Ultimately what I am looking for is the city/town north of gold and bridges. It is a very hard name to pronounce. It took me forever to pronounce it correctly. 

BJ was from the northern West Coast, where do you draw the line? California takes up a gigantic portion of that coast.
