What bothers me about this case is that our national laws vary. In some cases if nobody wants to press charges, depending on local, district, county, the cop's hands are tied. But witnesses unrelated to either of them, called the cops witnessing him hitting her. I'd argue that it should not matter what either say in that case. The witness saw it. That should take the decision of, at least detainment, out of the hands of police, and make it mandatory to detain at a minimum to create a cooling off period.
Worst example I can think of in crime history, was when a witness called in a naked guy running in the streets, they called the cops, and Jeffery Dahmer sweet talked the police and they chalked it up to a lover's spat and drunkenness, and let them go, only for the victim to get murdered. I think the better laws are ones where it doesn't matter if those involved don't want to press charges. While only on face value, judging on the news reports of witnesses seeing him assault her, and police body cam video seeing how scared she was, there should be some law to at least create some forced separation to create a cooling off period. 
They are now reporting that Laundrie's parents may have, and be, helping him hide from police.
