"Laughing At Religion" Meme Thread

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Yep. Thems the rules. I'm sure things went down that way. But I doubt they went through the trouble of planning the wedding. They just went ahead and stoned her to death. Hell, we still have idiots stoning girls to death for being raped in contemporary times.

It scares me that some people (especially literalists) think that the Bible is a source of indisputable moral wisdom. I dispute it all day. Sure, some things are on point. But other things are just undeniably evil.

Christianity has hundreds of "feast days" that celebrate ridiculous things that never happened.

When I was about 6, our class teacher told us all about St Lawrence. He was barbequed alive, over hot coals. At one point he said to his executioner: "You can turn me over no, I'm done on that side"   I had nightmares. Mum went over to see the mother superior, again.

My favourite saint is St Joseph of Cupertino, who levitated.  A "remarkably unclever person" (thick as a fucking brick), it was his best thing.

Joseph of Copertino (ItalianGiuseppe da Copertino; 17 June 1603 – 18 September 1663) was an Italian Conventual Franciscan friar who is honored as a Christian mystic and saint. He was said to have been remarkably unclever, but prone to miraculous levitation and intense ecstatic visions that left him gaping.[1]: iii  Joseph began to experience ecstatic visions as a child, which were to continue throughout his life, and made him the object of scorn. He applied to the Conventual Franciscan friars, but was rejected due to his lack of education. He then pleaded with them to serve in their stables. After several years of working there, he had so impressed the friars with the devotion and simplicity of his life that he was admitted to their Order, destined to become a , in 1625.

Joseph of Cupertino - Wikipedia

The Italians are crazy about their saints. When visiting Italy, almost every church I saw had a body part of some saint. Some had an entire saint, mouldering away in faded finery in a glass case. Enough to puta bloke off his lunch.

Whilst in Italy I learned that there are two churches claiming to have the head of St John The Baptist. The bloke who told me came over all unnecessary when I offered a perfectly reasonable explanation. (certainly as reasonable as claims of a levitating saint)  I said it was obvious to me; one of the heads was of John The Baptist when he was a younger man.

I wonder if he tastes like chicken, too?

That might require some explanation...

True story: When I was growing up, my Dad used to tell me sometimes that he'd "ring my neck" if I did something "bad".
This went on for a few years.
One day, I finally asked him what that meant:

He grew up on a farm, and my Grandma would occasionally ask him to go out in the yard and get a chicken, for dinner.
His practice at the time was to grab a chicken by the head, and swing it around forcefully until its body flew off.
Often, the chicken's body would run around the yard without its head for a while.
He'd go get the chicken's body, and deliver it to my Grandma, along with the head.

I didn't do a lot of "bad" things after that explanation.

On a related note, the phrase "running around like a chicken with its head cut off" was much more meaningful after that.
Disappointing theists since 1968!

Here there is popular biscuit (cookie) maker who sell some of their biscuits in a tube. Without fail, the top biscuit is broken.

-----So I'm thinking of writing to them to suggest they leave out that top  biscuit.  Huh
