Practicing fundamentals keeps us sharp, allows us to continue completion of higher tasks.
As we do so, formerly higher tasks become fundamental. Spending too much time on fundamentals, such as geometrical shapes, means completion of higher tasks no longer continues. So, understand the rudiment, fully, then move on. RE: Understanding the rudiment has much to give helps free that mind for further work.
