Worst food/recipes

Many years go I went to visit a friend. I get that we were both pinching pennies but she was frying up a pan of onions and SPAM. Nope.

Spam and Limburger cheese with Miracle Whip on Wonder white bread. Or use Velveeta "cheese". I can't imagine a worse sandwich unless actual garbage was used. These are all things that will never be seen in our house.

Spam was on our table at least once a week, that and/or ring bologna. My parents encouraged lots of ketsup.

I actually liked ring bologna back in the day.  Fried and lots of ketchup.  I could eat that.

We probably couldn't have afforded Spam. I know I never ate any growing up. I don't remember the first time I ate it, but only once since I've been married (42 years) and that was at a Boy Scout campout. Some of the boys were just gaga about Spam.

My grandma in East Texas would make us ham-hocks and okra for dinner sometimes. Didn't mind the pig-knees, but damn, I hate the slime of boiled okra.

Now, roll it in cornmeal and pan-fry it, I'm an okra-eating sonofabitch.

The one time my wife cooked (boiled) okra, it was as you described. Like anything, proper preparation is key. Rolled in cornmeal and fried, it probably isn't all that different from breaded, deep-fried zucchini, which I do actually like.

Fried, there is no slime. The heat and lack of moisture see it off. The cornmeal probably soaks up some of it too. I dunno.

My kid likes teriyaki flavor spam hawaiian style with rice, peas and onion. Hes gets a can every year for x-mas as a joke (plus a bag of socks).

You know, back when I was in the Navy, we had pretty good chow. I worked at Cape Canaveral on and off for about 3.5 years, (2001-2007) supporting launch ops for a missile defense program. The AF side had nothing but fast food. One could drive to the NASA side and get a decent meal, though. Our AF guys deserved better, but in general even we ate at the AF side, because we had work to do and the extra drive time would take too long. My eldest son is in the AF (he's a TSGT). I'll have to ask him how the food is.
