This Man Is A Devious Genius
Quote:Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a former public school educator, used his broad authority this week to sign into law a new state budget that increases funding for public schools – for the next four centuries.
Wisconsin governors have expansive partial veto power, and Evers got creative with his use of it in this budget. He crafted the four-century school aid extension by striking a hyphen and a "20" from a reference to the 2024-25 school year. The increase of $325 per student is the highest single-year increase in revenue limits in state history.
He also reduced a $3.5 billion tax cut for the state’s wealthiest residents to $175 million.

Outspoken climate activist Steven Spielberg has taken delivery of his $250 million superyacht – Even longer than a football field, the diesel-powered 4,444 ton vessel has two swimming pools and, in all possibility, a plush movie theater and a helipad.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

A worker swept away in the downtown Omaha storm sewer Friday morning was found more than a mile away clinging to grate near the Missouri River more than an hour later. The storm pipes are only 3 feet wide.

Seems Like Old Times
Quote:A 16-year-old boy has died following an industrial accident at a sawmill in Wisconsin.
Police received an early-morning call last Thursday regarding an unresponsive teenager at Florence Hardwoods, a sawmill in northern Wisconsin, according to the Florence county sheriff’s office. Deputies and paramedics transported the teenager to a local hospital before transferring him to Milwaukee children’s hospital.
The boy, whom authorities have not identified by name, died from his injuries on Saturday.
It's almost as if child labour laws were in place for a reason or something.

According to various recent news sources, child labour laws in several places in the US have been weakened or rolled back to allow teens to work in industries from which they were previously barred (with or without parents' permission).

How old is our universe? New study says Big Bang might have happened 27 billion years ago
For years, astronomers and physicists have primarily calculated the age of the cosmos by measuring the time elapsed since the Big Bang and studying the oldest stars.
But the study published July 7 in the journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" seems to confirm that previous estimates were widely off. What's referred to in the new study as the "impossible early galaxy problem" has long baffled scientists who struggle to reconcile why some galaxies thought to have come into existence long after the Big Bang appear to in fact be much older that the universe's estimated age.

I never once heard this "long baffled" anyone.
They all started talking about it when the James Webb came up with first 4, then a couple more.

Yeah, the popular press is impressively bad at science reporting. How many times have you read the headline, 'Astronomers Discover (Another!) Earthlike Planet' and it turns out to be a planet roughly the size and density of Earth. You dig a little deeper and find out that it also has a surface temperature of 3000F, is covered in an ocean of molten iron, and rains Dissolve-O-Gel.
