I can usually hear race in some form of vocalization, eyes closed/ on the phone/ etc., but don't care either way.

I object to the term ‘race’ - there’s no such thing. I propose referring to different varieties of humans as ‘breeds’.

When I was four years old the lady down the road would babysit while Mom and What's His Name worked in the fields. The 'rents were sharecroppers and cash money was rare. Rather than lose Mom's labor they let the neighbor babysit us in exchange for feeding her three kids lunch when David and I got ours. The lady cleaned up and tended our chickens. We left Missouri before I started school. Along about the third grade I had a sudden epiphany. I realized the lady and her kids were black. It had never been obvious before that, nothing important.
