C.S. Lewis, much beloved by American Christians, said this about theocracy (bold mine):

I am a democrat because I believe that no man or group of men is good enough to be trusted with uncontrolled power over others. And the higher the pretensions of such power, the more dangerous I think it both to the rulers and to the subjects. Hence Theocracy is the worst of all governments. If we must have a tyrant a robber baron is far better than an inquisitor. The baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity at some point be sated, and since he dimly knows he is doing wrong he may possibly repent. But the inquisitor who mistakes his own cruelty and lust of power and fear for the voice of Heaven will torment us infinitely because he torments us with the approval of his own conscience and his better impulses appear to him as temptations. And since Theocracy is the worst, the nearer any government approaches to Theocracy the worse it will be.

I wonder what would happen to a pastor who expressed this sentiment from the pulpit on Sunday morning.

Louisiana is one step closer to becoming the first state to require that public schools display the Ten Commandments in every classroom under a bill approved Wednesday by the state's House of Representatives.

Following a lengthy debate, lawmakers voted 82-19 in favor of House Bill 71. The bill’s author, Rep. Dodie Horton, R-Haughton, said the legislation honors the country’s religious origins.

“The Ten Commandments are the basis of all laws in Louisiana, and given all the junk our children are exposed to in classrooms today, it’s imperative that we put the Ten Commandments back in a prominent position,” she said.

The Ten Commandments are the basis of all laws in Louisiana as much as The Code of Hammurabi is the basis of all laws in Louisiana.

Pull their federal funding................ all of it.

Funny how no one seems to want to post ALL the commandments. In addition to the Big Ten, there are 613 mitzvot  (commandments) which include:

-Do not profane a judge.
-Do not hold grudges against people who disagree with you.
-Teach the Torah to your children.
-Never stop hating missionaries.
-Don’t cut your hair or shave your beard.
-Never marry a Gentile.
-Forgive all debts more than seven years old.

And so on. All of these have the same authority as the Big Ten, so why not post them as well,

It’s not that funny. Most don’t read their bible to know of the 613 or have been brainwashed like a robot to scream out that those are in the front of the book, aka OLD Testament and no longer apply to them

Odd they say "no graven images" so what are the statues and carvings of Jesus and Mary if not graven images? (I am assuming that "graven" means something like engraved, but I could be wrong)

You’re not wrong. The Hebrew wording is ‘…any graven image or any likeness of any thing that is in Heaven above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth.’

Ultra-conservative Jews take this so seriously that they will not take photographs or allow themselves to be photographed by another Jew.

So are they not allowed to take pictures of earthworms or fish?

Correct. No pictures of anything. The Hassidim are not ones to look for loopholes.
