“’Sin’ is a stupid word. Your Bible promotes rape, slavery, murder, incest, polygamy, human sacrifice, forced abortion, kidnapping, human trafficking, theft, arson, cattle rustling, oppression and genocide, while condemning ‘sins’ like non-procreative love, wearing blended fabrics and eating shrimp.” (Docktor Jim)

"The world is my country; all of humanity are my brethren; and to do good deeds is my religion." (Thomas Paine)
"I was a thief, and I never felt guilty about it. This was in Canada, when I was in college. I was studying criminology and I was also in this gang of thieves. We were hijacking big meat company trucks and cigarette company trucks. At that time, the cigarette companies had the people right by the nuts and the short hairs. They were exploiting the people with a substance that was addictive and the government was charging taxes. To break open a parked truck of cigarettes and take those cartons and go sell them, we felt we were doing society a favor.
The big meat companies polluted and slaughtered hogs in these horrible ways and exploited their workers. So we stole hams and turkeys and gave them out for Christmas; that was a positive social move for me. We weren’t robbing from people; we were robbing from big corporations. It was kind of legitimized at that time. I never felt guilty about that." - Dan Aykroyd
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
We've arranged a society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science and technology.
And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. - Carl Sagan

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”
- Isaac Asimov
“Do those people who hold up the Bible as an inspiration to moral rectitude have the slightest notion of what is actually written in it?” (Richard Dawkins)

He was from an earlier generation of intellectuals, which included Richard Hofstadter and Christopher Lasch. They knew that for a good society science is necessary but not sufficient. Science doesn't teach us wisdom. Asimov would include people who only value science, not good literature or philosophy, among the anti-intellectuals. He wrote books on Shakespeare, Paradise Lost, the Bible, and many aspects of history. RE: It's A Quote

Experience comes from living life. Often it comes from learning the hard way, like how I learned not to trust certain philosophers. Verifiable knowledge comes from the sciences. Good judgment comes from both experience and knowledge in combination. Philosophy was necessary for earlier generations. It is less relevant with the more verified knowledge we acquire. This is because so much of our verified knowledge is counter-intuitive. Call that anti-intellectual if you like, but intellectuals have often disagreed among themselves. |
