Scientists are one step closer to seeing the return of the long-extinct dodo, with the latest breakthrough by Texas-based Colossal Biosciences.

The company revealed on Wednesday that it has successfully cultured pigeon primordial germ cells (PGCs) for the first time, marking a significant milestone that it says will help to enable its plans for engineering dodo genetics.

Along with the announcement of its avian genetics advancements, Colossal said in a press release that it had also secured $320 million in new funding, which it says will accelerate its ambitious de-extinction and conservation projects.

Earlier this year, Colossal made headlines with the announcement that it had successfully engineered the births of a trio of wolf pups that closely resemble the extinct dire wolf, a Pleistocene-era species popularized in recent years by its appearances in the popular series Game of Thrones.

At the heart of Colossal’s dodo project is the Nicobar pigeon, which is the closest living relative to the extinct bird. Using gene-edited chickens possessing no germ cells of their own, the Colossal scientists plan to insert Nicobar pigeon PGCs that will act as surrogates, which they say will potentially allow chickens to lay eggs that will hatch into pigeons.

This, combined with high-quality genome data from other species closely related to the dodo, such as the Rodrigues solitaire and the critically endangered tooth-billed pigeon, brings the de-extinction of this species closer to reality than ever before.

Don’t we have enough trouble with normal-sized pigeons?

A group of scientists, including ones from NASA, is exploring options for a different near-Earth space rock, dubbed 2024 YR4, which the agency’s Center for Near Earth Objects believes has a mere 0.00081 percent chance of hitting us — but a much larger four percent chance of hitting the Moon — in December 2032.

But even if it only strikes the Moon, the results could still be dangerous for astronauts in space, who could be battered by debris resulting from the collision.

They propose detonating the space rock using ā€œnuclear explosive devices,ā€ a violent option that could allow us to explore yet another way of deflecting potentially dangerous near-Earth space rocks — ā€œeven if lunar impact is ruled out,ā€ the researchers say.

The researchers found that there isn’t enough time to launch a ā€œreconnaissance missionā€ first to get a better idea of its mass — required data for a successful deflection attempt. Thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope observations, we know it measures nearly 300 feet in length, but its mass remains a notable unknown.

The team calculated that 2024 YR4’s mass could range anywhere from 72.7 million to a whopping 2 billion pounds, which would make designing a DART-like mission practically impossible.

The best option for a recon mission is a ā€œlate 2028ā€ launch, they found, which would only leave roughly three years to intercept the asteroid.

On the other hand, for a ā€œkinetic robust disruptionā€ — essentially blowing it up into pieces — the team concluded that NASA could have anywhere from five to seven years to develop a mission. For a ā€œnuclear disruption,ā€ the next available launch window ranges from late 2029 to late 2031.

The team proposed sending two 100-kiloton nuclear devices capable of navigating space by themselves to the asteroid, each of which is roughly five to eight times as powerful as the nuclear bombs the United States dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945. A backup explosive would be kept ā€œonboard in case it is needed,ā€ the researchers wrote.

So, rather than pepper astronauts with moon rocks, the plan is to pepper them with radioactive asteroid debris? Helluva trade-off.

ā€˜Alien’ DNA found inside humans — it was inserted into our genes, new study claims

An outlandish study asserts that aliens might have abducted us and inserted genes into human DNA, with the fallout affecting potentially millions of people.

Dr. Max Rempel, the founder and CEO of the DNA Resonance Research Foundation, came to this far-fetched-seeming conclusion by analyzing DNA from both regular people and those who have claimed to have been abducted by aliens. This comes following a spike in UFO sightings over the last year, making many fear that we are on the verge of some not-so-friendly close encounters.

The scientist specifically analyzed 581 complete families from the 1,000 Genomes Project, discovering ā€˜large sequences’ of DNA in 11 families that didn’t appear to correspond to either family.

These genetic aberrations entailed a bundle of 348 non-parental genetic variants. As the subjects were born before 1990, this ruled out human gene-editing technologies like CRISPR, which only emerged in 2013.

Rempel also analyzed 23andMe results from individuals who self-identify as alien abductees, discovering that some families showed evidence of non-parental markers.

If this evidence is confirmed to be true, the alien prober feels that ā€œit could be possible to detect which humans carry alien DNA, essentially identifying hybrids.ā€

The extra-terrestrial enthusiast even claimed that noted that a good portion of those with autism, ADHD, and Asperger’s, and other neurodivergent traits could contain these alien insertions, although he noted this is speculation at this point.

He even suggested that these extraterrestrial genetic modifications could bestow humans with unusual abilities like telepathy.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

And we were all stupid enough to believe that autism is caused by vaccinating pregnant women with Tylenol.Ā  Good job we have the New York Post to clear up these mysteries.

It's a good thing he's cautious enough to label his speculations as such.

If done right, Dr. Max Rempel can make a lot of money - he just needs to look upon Avi Loeb.

Newspapers worldwide are already writing about him, now he needs to appear on several YouTube channels and then land a book deal about his claims of alien DNA in humans which will then become an international bestseller - just like Avi Loeb with his "Oumuamua is a spaceship" grift.

Avi Loeb is a very respected scientist with a stack of credentials. That's how he's managed to avoid tanking his career and reputation with his overzealous pursuit of aliens. The only reason, I suspect.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

'Planet Y' theory hints at hidden Earth-size world lurking in the solar system — and it could be much closer to us than 'Planet Nine'

Astronomers believe they have uncovered evidence of a previously unknown ninth planet lurking in the not-too-distant reaches of the solar system. This hypothetical world, dubbed "Planet Y," could be around the same size as Earth and may exist alongside another popular Planet Nine candidate — potentially bringing our cosmic neighborhood's planetary tally to 10, if both can be confirmed.

in a study published Aug. 21 in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, another group of researchers claims to have uncovered evidence of a completely new Planet Nine (P9) candidate, which they've dubbed Planet Y. This hypothetical world, which would also lurk within the Kuiper Belt, could be around twice as near to Earth as Planet X — and it may be much closer in size to our own planet, too. Its potential existence does not discount the Planet X theory, the researchers noted.

The team came to this conclusion after analyzing the trajectories of 50 Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) and discovering that they were tilted by around 15 degrees compared with the rest of the solar system's planets. The only thing that could explain this tilt was a hidden world, they argued.

Based on their calculations, the study team believes that Planet Y is likely a rocky world with a mass somewhere between that of Mercury and that of Earth. This is significantly smaller than the hypothesized mass of Planet X, which is proposed as a gas giant up to 10 times more massive than Earth.

The researchers also propose that Planet Y is located somewhere between 100 and 200 times farther from the sun than Earth is. That's not too far beyond the orbit of Neptune, which orbits the sun at 30 times the Earth-sun distance, and it's much closer to us than Planet X, which is likely at least 400 times farther from the sun than Earth is. (At these distances, both planets would reflect very little light back to Earth, making them hard to spot directly.)

ā€œDrilling to this depth is unprecedented on Marsā€: How the ESA’s new robotic rover will take the search for alien life to new depths.

The quest for life on Mars will soon go deeper than ever before as the European Space Agency’s ExoMars Rosalind Franklin Rover launches in 2028, deploying a robotic rover capable of drilling two meters below the Martian surface.

The ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover is the first mission ever explicitly designed to look for evidence of past or present Martian life. Part of that design is recognizing that material below the harsh present-day Martian surface may be the best hope of finding such evidence. At a depth of two meters (6.5 ft), the rover can collect samples that could date back as far as four billion years. At that time, Mars would have reflected the conditions of the early Earth, offering a new window into the origins of life as researchers explore whether or how life arose on the Red Planet.

ā€œThe drilling depth of two metres was chosen based on a balance of scientific goals, mechanical feasibility, and mission constraints,ā€ Harry Marsh, an Aberystwyth University postgraduate working on Enfys for the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin Rover, told The Debrief. ā€œThis depth is deep enough to reach pristine subsurface material that has been shielded from surface radiation and oxidation – essential for detecting preserved organic molecules.

ā€œGoing beyond two metres would require larger, heavier, and more power-hungry equipment, which is impractical for a mobile Rover,ā€ Marsh added.

ā€œThe surface of Mars has been completely baked by ionising radiation, oxidants and ultraviolet light, which rapidly degrade organic molecules,ā€ Marsh said. ā€œThe material two metres below the sun-baked surface has been shielded from these destructive forces.

ā€œDrilling to this depth is unprecedented on Mars, and is what makes the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin Rover special – its ability to access subsurface material and retrieve pristine samples which may contain preserved evidence of possible life,ā€ Marsh added.
