Obviously if you have a blog you can promote yourself that way. But as a new tweeter the best way to gain followers if you want to use it for Atheist tweeting is to friend prominent atheist tweeters and constantly post content. If you post good stuff, reply, retweet, etc you will get followers very quickly. I do suggest using the search keywords option in Twitter. Have a live feed of things you are interested in, and reply to them!
