For Black History Month

I have nothing against leo other than he didnt make a google search on it. There has been a greek history month for many many years now. Nor did I consider it a joke nor did it even look like a joke. It looked like an honest request to me.

No, Im not ignoring you...just kinda busy typing. Im sure the vast majority of people dont give a shit about history months.

My point was this:

A - Certain white people complain about black history month
B - They bring up "why cant there be a white history month?"
C - From their argument of ignorance they demand black history month be shut down.
D - if they really gave a shit about a white history month they would have researched and found that half of the year is devoted for whites.

So...why do they complain about teaching black history? They dont complain about asian-pacific month. they dont complan about German month.

Not all people who complain about it use that reasoning, because their 'objection' to it has nothing to do with being racist, and I think my original 2 cents along with Rev Rye's and a few other people demonstrated that. Painting all white people who object with that broad a brush is patently unfair.

I happen to be a member of a "downtrodden" race, Rev, who no longer has to worry about that shit in America, and I think this shit is ridiculous. No one has to agree with me, but I'm not doing it out of hatred or racism. I'm doing it because I think it's unnecessary, a bit unfair, it's poorly implemented, and misses the overall point - as a humanist.

The point is relatively simple. There is no need for any kind of 'history month'. It should just be history. It should be shown whenever. Plain and simple.

Jews are treated much better BECAUSE of education. Sure, a few generations ago they were treated like shit here in America, but that no longer is the case. There are a shit load of Jews in our government, a much higher representation percentage than the percentage of Jewish civilians in America. Many people in this country would support Israel even if they were stabbing catholic waffers with a nail just to crucify christ all over again (yes, THAT was a joke)

..but honestly, Jews have a much better position in America than blacks or most other Americans now. Of course they worked hard for it. Its getting to the point now that you cant even get elected to President unless you promise to support Israel 100%.

Example: There are currently THREE jews on the Supreme court out of 9 judges. That is one third of the court. Jews make up around 2 percent of the American population.

Blacks on the other hand have been hit extra hard by this economy. The percentages are way off, showing blacks to be that much more susceptable to the economic hardship than any other group.

I'm not arguing that Jews have it better now - but I will take your point and tell you: they did it without a history month.

My dad is a racist asshole - I'm not. I was educated with an emphasis on international scale that didn't require we take a break for different months - often we were reading or learning about different cultures at the same time so similarities could be pointed out.

Maybe it's just a belief, but I do believe in it firmly, that a better grasp of education in general would eliminate racism, rather than devoting cultural months to races or religions.

And that is EXACTLY what it is...its just history. They will show it whenever the subject comes up. And they also have special times in the year for focusing on specific curriculum...exatly how it is done right now. Plain and simple. Certain months are for WWII, another is for WWI, another is for vietnam...etc..etc...

This is what they call "curriculum". For some reason, the curriculum focus for Black history has received many complaints. Apparently we are not allowed to focus on blacks, unlike the other subjects in the curriculum that we have always focused on with no complaint.

Strange that your family learned nothing from it. I learned quite a bit from it. I learned enough to be able to openly question my fathers racism at the age of 16 from it. So why didnt your family not learn something from it? Did they not pay attention to the curriculum in school? Did they fight against it instead of actually studying...I dont know...why didnt they learn anything from it?

If I were to be asked "do Jews have it better now?". Of course I would be a bit cautious about answering, pointing out that I dont have all the facts in front of me, but generally I would say "yes, they are quite successful in this country compared to their small population percentage". Then again, it is usually easier to hide someones Jewishness as opposed to hiding the fact that you are black. A jew can easily claim to be something else, passing off as a white Christian sometimes if they can watch the Hebrew accent of course, Americanize their name.... a black person cant "whiten" their skin to hide their minority :-D . Same thing with atheists. Atheists are getting better in America without a history month, but they too can easily hide their atheism. Blacks cannot hide their blackness.

Not sure how they ran curriculum where you went to school, but all through my highschool, and even during my 5 year electrical apprenticeship, they used "focus months". This month we focus on capacitors. Next month we focus on Inductance.

Of course better education would help end racism. It helped end mine. I am proof that education HELPS destroy racism. It isnt the only thing that does it, and sometimes racism is so ingrained by the family that there is no getting rid of it...but it does help.

The thing is though, you argue that education would eliminate racism, yet you would get rid of black history month? Im having a hard time understanding what you are trying to say?
