My own denials of rationality.

Couldn't agree more. I'd possibly go further and say that Love, Beauty, Literature and almost every feature that makes life wonderful is deeply rooted in our irrational nature.

The rational features gives us the tools to appreciate them.

If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?

Wait no I still like it...

Ok, must be the games or something. I'M SAFE. No thanks to you. *lol*

As far as emotion goes...it's a "blessing" and a "curse." We get emotions like love, joy, and compassion, but we also get emotions like jealousy, despair, and cruelty. For all the good there is an equal measure of bad. Perhaps if I felt a bit more "coldly logical," I wouldn't be so damn terrified of death, for example. Every day I am taking a shower, my mind drifts off and begins contemplating things I don't want it to; namely the finiteness of that moment, of the next moment, and that all moments must stretch onwards to a moment where there shall be no more. That there will be an empty void. Not even a cold or hot void; not even a blank one. A simple lack of conscious awareness, ceasing to be. Ultimately my identity is all I have left if I strip everything else away. And no matter what, I will lose that, too. No philosophical thinking nor platitudes of reassurance have ever managed to break me of this fear.

One thing is for certain, though, I won't ever go back to drinking the kool-aid of religion. As tempting as it is to accept the hollow lies, I know that they are exactly that; hollow lies. I've seen too much to ever think otherwise.

Perhaps if I was just a creature of cold logic, I could much more easily accept the loss of identity in death. But I'm not, so I can't. Kinda sucks.

May his eternity of silence be a peaceful one. I'll miss that old bastard.

Rumor has it that even on his deathbed he was cracking jokes about his heart condition, the afterlife, and god.

Fucking hell, Carlin, if I could've given you all the years of my worthless life, I would've.

WHATEVA, I DO WHAT I WANT! Wink Shades

I dunno, I just didn't see Japan through rose-tinted glasses when I went over there. Immerse yourself in ANY culture and you'll see it's fucked up, the Japanese are noooo exception. I think my hatred comes less from the Japanese themselves, and more from the unprecedented veneration that comes from everyone else towards it. It's...really not all that special and in many cases it's downright unremarkable, so I never quite get where the near [or absolute] obsession of it comes from.

Georgia was plagued with heavily-devout baptists in particular who just couldn't leave god out of anything. They prayed for rain, for sun, for their job to be easy that day, for their car to not stall, to not get in an accident, for having good sex, for this cigarette to be a good smoke. They prayed for EVERYTHING; holy SHIT it drove me nuts. They weren't even trying to convert me most of the time; they just kept saying "god god god god god god god god" for everything. Best way to erode my already marginal grasp on sanity? THAT.

I spent some time thinking about your OP. This shouldn't have been a hard exercise, as I frequently have Lewis Black-ish rants about things.

I have a slightly less violent reaction as you to vegans and vegetarians, simply because I know people who do it for sheer health reasons - diabetes and such - and they don't throw it in people's faces or act morally superior. For whatever reason, such diets work with their body chemistry and it's cool. But the ones who like to bandy it about...yeah, let me tell you - I've been at a point in my life where I had to choose between food and rent and I didn't live like a carnivore or a vegetarian by choice, I lived by what was on sale. There's not a damn thing morally superior about eating veggies over meat when you're hungry. Trust me. So yeah, those douchebags make me angry - especially the ones who get overly spiritual about it.

I can't stand people who argue in lines at the check out or a fastfood restaurant. These days a lot of places are trying to run on minimal staff and they don't allow the "worker bees" (non management staff) to make many decisions in the best of times (I worked retail, I know how it is - even if you have a good brain, they don't give a fuck). By arguing in the regular line, you cause unnecessary hold ups and I swear that worker is going to have to get a manager ANYWAY. In a grocery store, fucking go to customer service. In a fast food line, drive around and go to the desk. Do NOT waste my fucking time arguing about how one size frosty is 20 cents cheaper than the other and why you don't understand that - especially if you're driving a BMW or similarly priced car. That makes you an asshole. The rest of us have places to go and things to do and I waste precious time sitting behind your ass while you pretend 30cents or less is going to break your bank. Perhaps then you shouldn't be dining out - you literally just spent more of that in wasted gas by idling while you flapped your gums than it would have been to get the higher priced milkshake to feed your cottage-cheese covered ass.

Truckers. I can't goddamn stand them. Let me preface this by saying that I understand not everyone is as intelligent as the next person and my problem isn't as irrational as "they're dumb fucks." My problem is that they are dumbfucks even at what they do. You drive for a living - it should be reasonable to expect you to know how to use a GPS unit and/or a map. I shouldn't have to stay on the phone guiding your retarded, tobacco chewing, "lawdy!" shouting ass wherever you need to go. Most of my headaches during the day come from truckers who call - even from completely out of state, or several states away! - asking me how to get to our facility...and we're RIGHT off the main road. They are by and large lazy, ignorant, and worthless, so far that I can tell from the ones that have come through our plant.

People who call back unknown numbers that didn't leave them a message, asking "who dis?!"

Twilight. Seriously. I have not read the entire books, but I have read snippets and summaries and seen bits of the movies. I can't stand it. I can't stand the phenomena and fucking hate the actors. Don't tell me that it was similar when Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter came through...no it isn't. Both of those are based on a legitimate "hero's adventure." Even the shite-worthy Eragon was better than Twilight. I waffle between whether this is irrational or not, but I think the level of worship for this story both exposes a disgustingly stupid underbelly of the world and a disgustingly greedy marketing underbelly willing to cash in on an appalling level of mediocrity and bullshit. I'm not saying I don't like harlequin-esque stories either - I really do, and I call them for what they are and enjoy them, but I don't call them great books or encourage people to read them or pretend they are anything other than what they are: soft core on paper. Except twilight takes too long to get to the fucking. So what are you doing for all those pages till then? Orgasm denial? Also, Bella is a HORRIBLE heroine. Even Tolkein's highly traditional fantasy story includes a woman kicking ass and taking names.

Traffic. I cannot. Stand. Traffic. People do not seem to have a sense that there are other fuckers behind them and therefore maybe they should learn how to use exit lanes and how to merge onto the highway (hint, you're supposed to speed up) so that the flow of cars can continue. Go back to driver's ed, you fucktards. Please learn how to do the speedlimit. Also, please stop speeding up to get into a lane and then slowing down to 5 or 10 under the speed limit. That is an asshole move.

Related: anyone who takes up two parking spaces in an attempt to keep their car from being hit or in any way touched deserves a key-mark right on the hood. You, sir or madam, are a douchebag. You are a slightly smaller, but more idiotic, douchebag if it's simply because you can't park

(March 7, 2012 at 1:18 pm)Creed of Heresy Wrote: #4: Niggas. OK WAIT, DON'T LET THE HATE TRAIN ENTER THE STATION YET, hang on, lemme explain. I DO NOT hate black people. I hate niggas. There is a difference. Black people are just that. They're people. No different from you and me. A "nigga" is a very clear and concise definition of a stereotype that gets filled by said people. These individuals are people who refuse to let go of the past. They're angry about the injustices done to their ancestors. It's a terrible thing, slavery; it was horrible. But the thing is, we aren't hiding that fact. We openly admit what we did. We lay the facts of slavery bare for any and all to read and listen to, so that they might know of the crime of our past. The clearest way to apologize to someone is to NOT HIDE IT, to come out and admit it and to demonize those past actions, and that is what we do. We make NO effort to hide what has happened in the past, we demonize what happened and we uphold it as a lesson of what NOT to do. Niggas, however, aren't satisfied with this most absolute of apologies. They want to guilt trip us, they want to be the victims, they revel in believing that they're being oppressed and prejudiced against because it gives them an excuse to not do a single fucking worthwhile thing with their lives, because they can lay the blame for this squarely at the feet of their "oppressors." Not all black people are like this. Actually, to be honest, only a fraction of them are. But the ones that do are holding their entire culture back. And frankly, I'm sick of them, I'm sick of their whiny bullshit, and they need to grow the fuck up.

I have never known anyone like this. I have been around plenty of people of all races who are ignorant and behave in immature and aggravating ways. I have been around people of all races that blame their problems on other people. But I have never been around a black person who has ever expressed anything remotely close to what you are describing. And the thing is, I have heard plenty of white people express the same gripe that you have. Most of them start out just like you, and they say "I'm not racist, BUT..." and then they say racist stuff.

I ride the bus to work and school almost every day. I am white, and generally there are more black people on the bus. On occasion, some of the people on the bus will be loud or annoying, and they dress in certain ways and speak in certain ways and I am quite sure that these folks would fall into the category you are aiming for here. But they are usually on their way to work or school themselves, and I have never ever heard anybody on the bus say something like, "Yeah, I'm on my way to work at McDonalds. It's a terrible job, lots of work and for almost no money. I just wish whitey would give me my forty acres and a mule already."

I think this is some kind of fantasy people have. Surely if there were black people who really did walk around, saying "I blame all of my problems on white people. I do not accept your apology for slavery and I will not do anything until you give me something," it must be such a miniscule number that to hate them would be an incredible waste of effort. What you are describing has nothing to do with race. Some black folks may blame institutional racism - which is a real thing, by the way - for the problems in their lives. I also know white people who blame the rich, and white people who blame the poor, and white people who blame unions, and white people who blame immigrants, and white people who blame liberals, and white people who blame affirmative action. I could go on and on. When you use the word "nigga" you are bringing a racist element into it. The whole "nigga is not the same as nigger" does not fly, because let's be honest...you aren't really using a different word. I've heard it plenty of times in my life, and I am fully aware of the rationalizations used, and they are all tired. It's the same idea, and the same intent. Just say you hate it when people are lazy and blame their shitty life on other people. Problem solved.
