(Strange as it sounds, these people really do grow on you. The culture does have it's allure. You're never too far from a good bellylaugh, for example, and they have a tendency to laugh right along with you, even when they don't know you're laughing at them. Now that is some friendly shit..isn't it?)

You can have death. And yes the culture does have its allure such as southern hospitality being a real thing. Whenever I see it, however, I can't help but think how differently I would be treated if I wasn't pasty white.

Or if they knew you weren't as white as they (or you) thought you were. Same for themselves really. For me, I suppose, the south is like a blanket I've had since childhood. It's ragged, it's old, entirely too hot, it itches and it's full of mystery bugs....but..for some reason, it's comforting to me.

I love the south for the country beauty, a bit more freedom, and the laid back attitude.
The racism, religious ignorance, and greedy hatefulness are a major spot on this beautiful land.

I am happy to have come into this world in a region that is rampant with ignorance and make it to adulthood with my reasoning faculties in tact.
I was raised around people just like that. My sweet grandmother, who I loved, made us listen to Rush Limbaugh's "See, I Told You So" all the way to Florida. She was highly political and LOVED Newt Gingrich. My whole family was racist, and I often was made to be an outsider, and even beaten for my strong opinions, contrary to their own.
I don't know why it is that I always knew it was wrong. I always have been a liberal. Yes I was an idol worshiping Catholic for the majority of my life, but I always knew when somebody said something stupid, really and deep down, even in religious terms.
People here are taught to not question things. I have met a lot of great moderates and liberals here, but every conservative I meet here is the same level of batshit crazy. Maybe people in the south tend to be more serious about indoctrinating their children into a mindset of stubborn ignorance?

Another thing that seems to make the south this dumb, is that people that are born there who are intelligent and not racist bible-thumpers tend to move away. At least in my family they did.

There aren't exactly boatloads of opportunity in the Deep South. The farther north you go the greater your odds of having a "better" life become. Some of this was intentional, btw, fucking Yankees..lol. The south has been the north's fridge, source of raw materials and energy, and it's toilet at different points in time, for a very long time.
