More Kony Shit

Sure, Kony is so 2003...that must be why the International Criminal Court still want him arrested. So many people seem to want to twist the point of this campaign. We live in a society where we expect evildoers to get caught and punished eventually. Kony isn't as dangerous anymore, but we never stopped hunting Bin Laden just because he wasn't attacking the USA on a large scale anymore.
Oh come on, not only is this whole campaign completely ineffective bullshit it's also just about one of the single WORST uses for charity money I could possibly think of.
Instead of millions of charity dollars going to useful causes like medicine, food-aid etc they're going to waste it attempting to convince celebrities to convince the US government that they should go hunt a broke-ass former warlord hiding in the middle of an African jungle with his little band of merry men. And really, these are people who actually think that buying their little 'action kits' and then running around graffiting other people's property with their shitty little posters is going to change the world...
.
They already give millions of dollars to useful causes. Yes, money is also spent on getting the message out, but can you really argue that it hasn't been extremely effective? Charity is great, but a charity that is virtually unknown will not get enough donations to do anything.
As I said before, if you think that we should just ignore war criminals because they have no power anymore, then you are welcome to hold that opinion. I personally think people who commit crimes should be prosecuted, period. We still hunt down and convict Nazi war criminals. Time or loss of power is no reason to give up or not care about previously committed atrocities. RE: More Kony Shit

Regarding this campaign or any other, I do sometimes wonder why people spend so much time shooting them down. If you don't agree with the campaign, its fine, put your money where you see fit. But investing time and effort undermining the efforts of others seem to be a hobby to many people. I mean, look at that, some guy wasted his time doing a video, instead of doing something useful. Don't agree with kony2012 and/or any other campaign? Okay, just go do some LOLcats or somethin, not a problem for me. You have to wonder why these people feel the need to demand where other people put their donation money.
And really, I'd wrater see grafitty and/or posters of people fighting a good cause than the usual numbskull ones we have right now done by some hip-hop wannabe. RE: More Kony Shit

You have to wonder why these people feel the need to demand where other people put their donation money. That's not entirely fair, its not wrong to have a healthy amount of skepticism about where your money is going. I simply do not trust evangelical christians to spend money in a purely secular fashion. Sue me.. they don't have a great track record in not pulling a big con. Jedidiah Jenkins, Invisible Children’s Director of Ideology Wrote:Thirty-seven percent of our budget goes directly to central African-related programs, about 20 percent goes to salaries and overhead, and the remaining 43 percent goes to our awareness programs. […] But aside from that, the truth about Invisible Children is that we are not an aid organization, and we don’t intend to be. I think people think we’re over there delivering shoes or food. But we are an advocacy and awareness organization. Great, sounds good.. awareness of what? Uganda? Weird.. they hardly mention Uganda apart from the Kony video. Weird cult-ish awareness of a "fourth estate" program for children.. okay... well.. fine... For all the money raised.. they don't actually speak about Uganda a whole lot, the money seems mostly wasted APART from the Kony video. Why shouldn't I be skeptical. People are aware, great, now how are you spending the millions of dollars to make us MORE aware of the issue? Why not start spending some on solving the problem, instead of talking about it. I refuse to apologise for not getting behind this campaign. There is nothing wrong with the message, and I don't claim it is party to any wrong doing. However, I'm not convinced that appeal to hollywood is the way forward. Firstly.. they are already trying to catch Kony, those trying to catch Kony, are guilty of almost equivalent human rights abuses, and additional US troops in a volatile country might not be the answer here. Only by maintaining a skeptical eye on slick campaigns like this, can we apply pressure that the funds raised are spent wisely. Blindly giving money because a video had a cute kid calling him a bad man, is not the best use of your time and effort for promoting good in the world.
Self-authenticating private evidence is useless, because it is indistinguishable from the illusion of it. ― Kel, Kelosophy Blog
If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside? The f**king janitor or the dude who runs the waterslide. Throughout history every mystery. Ever solved has turned out to be. Not Magic. ― Tim Minchin, Storm
People do realize that the situation in the DRC is such that Kony could easily replenish his numbers, right?

Let me know your thoughts Tibby. I would obviously like to encourage others to watch as well, he raises some very good points. Other than that I fail to see the reason why you bring religion into this, so where are you getting at? Quote:Great, sounds good.. awareness of what? Uganda? Weird.. they hardly mention Uganda apart from the Kony video.Clearly you misunderstood the whole point of the campaign, it is not about a nation, it is about the people that are being abused by the guy. Again, you are free to not participate, noone said you'd be a lesser person for doing so, so whats the problem? Quote:I refuse to apologise for not getting behind this campaign. Noone asked for your apology, you don't like it? Go somewhere else. Noone is judging you, and it seems to me you are the one that somehow feels the need to apologize. Don't care, if you have better ways to spend your money, then so be it, perhaps you could show us what are those ways so we can help if we can. Unless you have evidence that the campaign is indeed a scam, don't bother to rehiterate your apologetics. Your opinion on how this problem should be adressed has no value without data to support it, unless your saying nothing should be done, in that case I vehemently disagree. Ok, now you made a claim that it is a 'slick' campaign, for that, I'll ask for evidence. But while you're getting that, you can also think in a better way to solve the problem. Its easy to destroy initiatives, but do you have better options? As a personal example, I can say that I don't like the capitalist model, but you know why I don't just rant on about it? Because I don't have anything better to provide in return. |
