I'm a big fan of metal music, particularly of the death and thrash metal genres. Occasionally I'll listen to black or doom metal, when I'm in the mood.
I also listen to jazz-fusion, classical, ambient, and classic rock.
Favorite bands are Testament, Death, Kreator, Nile, Emperor.
Now, that the flow is stalled,
The breath is held, the framework built,
Do the clock's hands fly, or remain still?

May I ask what the difference is between death, black and doom metal? I am genuinely curious.

Death metal is, in my opinion, the most diverse, as there are more melodic types and more atonal, chaotic types. But generally, in death metal you have very low-tuned guitars, deep growling vocals, and rather violent thematic material:
Black metal can be either fast or slow, but it typically invokes a very dark, dramatic, epic, or otherwise haunting atmosphere. Typically you'll find high pitched shrieked vocals, and so-called "church organ" riffs. It's also typical that they will take on very anti-religioius or satanic subject matter:
Doom metal is very slow, thick, and heavy, in an attempt to sound very hopeless, despairing, or funeral-esque. It's often combined with elements of black or death metal to increase the emotional impact.
And really, aspects of all of these and more can and often are combined, to hone in on a very specific sound: There's blackened death, Death/doom, blackened doom, etc.

I mostly listen to rock, hard rock, Asian pop (mostly Japanese and Chinese), metal (though not speed or thrash), and various blues based genres.
I also listen to country, opera, and classical, though not as much.
Music I avoid, mostly rap and ambient.
Currently listening to Alex Chilton.... er, now Sandy Denny & the Strawbs.

Sorry, I just saw my initial reply and realized that I might have hijacked the thread a little.
Genres? Hard Rock and Metal (thrash is cool, but no cookie monster vocals and the machine gun bass drums are now way past boring). I love funk. Pop is good, but died in the mid-eightees. I'm down with the blues, but will never understand rap; some good tunes, perhaps I just don't have the proper frame of reference. Same with country; country is cool, modern pop-country is shit. I love a lot of jazz, but there is some jazz I simply don't get. Classical? Can't get enough of Bach's cello suites. Rachmaninov's 2nd and 3rd concertos are moving as well.
I think music is a lot like food. When you hear it you know immediately if you like it or not, regardless of genre. You like it or you don't, no harm, no foul. Appreciating music is like appreciating food; in this context appreciation means that you must endure it for the sake of some high browed societal compensatory effect: I don't get it.
To each his/her own.

I used to be a big old rock, hard rock and metal fan (I still have the vestigial long hair to prove it too, although I mainly keep it now because it infuriates the fashion police). I still am a fan of those genres, but I guess I've had my fill for a while now. I did have an urge to listen to some of the acoustic stuff from Led Zeppelin a few days back though. Actually, I could probably pick any of their songs at random and have a good time(s, bad times!). I think it's silly when people restrict themselves to certain genres, seemingly on principle.

These days I generally listen to Classic Rock (particularly of the British kind), artists and group bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, David Bowie, Queen etc.
I do listen to more modern artists and groups, however I steer away from a lot of what is considered pop, along with rnb and hip-hop these days. I just feel that sort of music was not created by artists rather by companies out to make money.

I am a fan of most musical forms that are complex, musically sophisticated, require a high level of musicianship, long form compositions. Within these parameters, there a quite a few genres and sub-genres I listen to.
I hardly ever listen to music as background. The vast majority of my listening is active listening.
The following are the genres I enjoy -

Progressive rock (past and present)- Gentle Giant, King Crimson, PFM, Happy the Man, National Health, Anglagard, Magma, Genesis (nothing after Wind and Wuthering), Opeth, Underground Railroad, Echolyn, Banco, Frank Zappa, The Thinking Plague, Henry Cow. So, so many more...
Progressive metal - Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Prymary, Leprous, Zero Hour, Haken, Vanden Plas, Andromeda, Suncaged...
Technical Metal - Spiral Architect, Atheist, Cynic, Aghora, Spastic Ink, Behold...the Arctopus, Meshuggah, Blotted Science, Canvas Solaris...
20th century, contemporary, avant-garde classical - Stravinsky, Prendereki, Ligeti, Schwantner, Xenakis, Bartok, Krenek, Varese, Barber, Berg, Webern, Carter, Wuorinen...
I am bored by all forms of pop, mainstream rock, blues, country, rap, etc.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
