The Need to Breed
RE: The Need to Breed
I'm getting a bit old for children, but if I chose to have any, I would adopt. There are millions of children who need parents. Prioritizing passing on your own genes is short-sighted: in a few generations your contribution is almost entirely lost in the genetic 'noise'. The difference you can make in the lives of your children by doing your best by them could well be having a significant impact long after your genetic contributions have been watered-down to 99.99% irrelevance.

We are currently already seeing a decline in growth, which I did not mention, but you seem to think I am confused about.

If the world only had 300 babies a day, given that about 156,000 people die every day, our population would collapse in a matter of decades and we would be near extinction in 75 years (because the death rate--not necessarily the absolute number--would increase as our population aged, about 3.5 billion people are currently 30 or over, the vast majority of those will be dead in fifty years). I suspect you meant to use a different number, but if birth rate were lowered to 30% of the current rate (to about 115,000 per day), it would be below the current death rate (about 156,000 per day) and our population would start to decline (in absolute terms, by about 40,000 per day).

After 2050, the projection is that population will begin to go down in absolute terms. Again, I'm not confused about declines in the rate of growth.

I said nothing about global warming projections. I don't see what my acceptance or non-acceptance of either projection has to do why you should or should not accept them. Perhaps you're 'on a roll' and not thinking things through? And the people who make the UN's population projections ARE scientists.

Maybe you should consider taking my posts, especially ones which are only sharing information, more literally. And law of charity says don't assume I'm an idiot who doesn't know what the terms I'm using mean without a good reason.

You usually do better work here, so I'm going to assume you're just a bit carried away and not take it personally.

I haven't taken anything personally in this thread - from anyone. I am no more upset with you than anyone else. No need for you to have hurt feelings or make the assumption that I'm upset. Nor do you need to assume that just because I disagree with you that it means I think you're an idiot. I do not.

You usually do better work here as well. So I'll assume that you are not as butthurt as your post implies.

Meanwhile, I did indeed get my numbers crossed, however population decline, even a massive one would be a GREAT thing - especially if it was a natural process. Imagine giving the earth a fighting chance by only having a couple billion people on it for a century or two.

Alas, you and I both know that's not going to happen, and by 2050 this place is going to get biblical.

Sooner than 2050 it would seem. More like 2030. About 18 years left to do something about our emissions and over population.
Fuck I hope that's wrong. Tongue

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Lincoln actually had a plan in the event of the population spiraling out of control.
One sec, heres a short youtube clip of the documentary:

atleast he gave you a date that he belives population rates will decrease. When do you expect overpopulation to "end the world"? Once that day passes (and the world is still here) when will your next doomsday prediciton be?

If you believe this overpopulation conspiracy nonsense, you must think the world will end in december 2012 anyway, so why are you worried?

And you sir don't seem to understand the many variables affecting global warming. Human population is one of those variables. In all likelihood, you probably don't "believe" in global warming either and may even dismiss that we are the greatest threat to our own existence. Also, I have made no predictions, I have only quoted from various scientific articles about the prognosis of this planet. Which by the way, is EXACTLY what you are doing when you quote people who predict declining population growth. It's pot & kettle pal.

This is so ridiculous it doesn't even warrant a response. I'm sorry I thought your video was bull shit. Butthurt much?

And we come full circle. No, human population isn't a factor (not that it couldn't be, mind you, just referencing the present and near future), if it were, then we wouldn't be fingering a tiny minority of the human population for contributing the overwhelming majority to the global warming pie.

Yes, human population is a factor. We know, for a fact, that we pump that shit into the ozone like nobody's business. However, we also know for a fact that the Earth goes through warming and cooling periods. If anything, we are speeding up a natural process. No matter how you cut it, there is global warming. No matter how little or how much, we do contribute to it. No matter how much we would like to think we can change shit, it's going to get hot here with or without our help. It's also going to get cold. The only thing we can do is try not to push the planet's buttons. These are facts. I would link shit, but this is common knowledge, meaning finding a reputable source will take you less than a minute, so do it your damn selves. Big Grin
