He'd probably follow - he'll admit plants aren't his first love, but he likes hearing about the science behind all of them. He really keeps me on my toes. Anything I'll plant near him I'll have to know its folklore and its evolutionary history and any special genetic quirks.

Do you have any other pictures of it? Closer ones of the fruit and leaves maybe? And do you know what kind of root it has? A deep taproot, or fibrous roots? Runners? Does it grow like you would expect a weed to, or it is a shrub type growth?

Let me ruminate on it a bit - I'm fresh out of search ideas at the moment and what I looked for didn't turn anything up. I haven't seen anything like that up here, so I'm going to assume it's something that needs a more tropical zone.

Would be a strange Dahlia - the sepals look too pointed and waxy for any breeds I've ever seen.

I'll try and keep an eye on them over the next few months. Maybe they will reveal themselves.

So that's the "fruit" you think? Not a flower bud? Could you pick one and slice it open and take a picture of that? that's how I figured out there was a passionflower vine growing up at our plant.
