Hovik and I have been calling it the "Devil's Bulb" because we don't know, but I'm curious to know what it actually is.

Do you have any other pictures of it? Closer ones of the fruit and leaves maybe? And do you know what kind of root it has? A deep taproot, or fibrous roots? Runners? Does it grow like you would expect a weed to, or it is a shrub type growth?

I only have two more photos of is and one of them isn't very clear. I'm not sure what the roots are like, they were in someone's plot, so I couldn't just uproot them. It grew almost like a vine, but it didn't need anything to support it... I guess it was bush-ish in nature... I'm not very good at all this, haha.

Let me ruminate on it a bit - I'm fresh out of search ideas at the moment and what I looked for didn't turn anything up. I haven't seen anything like that up here, so I'm going to assume it's something that needs a more tropical zone.

I don't think I know it but some dahlias look a little bit like that in bud.

Would be a strange Dahlia - the sepals look too pointed and waxy for any breeds I've ever seen.

I'll try and keep an eye on them over the next few months. Maybe they will reveal themselves.

So that's the "fruit" you think? Not a flower bud? Could you pick one and slice it open and take a picture of that? that's how I figured out there was a passionflower vine growing up at our plant.

I'll see about it. It's at a community garden type place. I don't know who owns that plot, but surely one bud going amiss won't be an issue. Hovik is doing some research out there this evening. I'll ask him if he minds bringing me one.
