He really keeps me on my toes. Anything I'll plant near him I'll have to know its folklore and its evolutionary history and any special genetic quirks. Oops. Missed this. You are so lucky. Lia glazes over the instant I use a plant's botanical name - and lots of what I grow are collected from botanical collections and don't, so far as I know, have popular names. We'll see how long it takes you to get out to this side of the country. Be sure to come in Spring so you can catch the tulips at Filoli and make time to get down to the Huntington in Southern California (San Marino); they've got 13 acres of succulents alone and the new Chinese garden will take your breath away. http://www.huntington.org/huntingtonlibr...ntifier=id If you plan ahead you can join a tour of Lotusland near Santa Barbara. http://www.lotusland.org/ Many more treasures to choose from including the garden at the Getty and the Sherman Library and Garden. Just a couple of snaps from Filoli last Spring: But wait, you're still in the honey moon phase. Hell I used to happily help Lia in the studio when we first got together. (Now I only do so with a bit of grousing.) But she likes the garden and so do her artist friends. No matter what medium they're known for lots of them are more into their gardens now than they are anything else they do.
He readily admits the only reason he would have a yard and me when he buys his house is I need one and the other needs me - he surely isn't going to take car of it himself. So there's no delusions there. But just before the seasons turned, I sent him out into the front yard to pick some herbs I needed for flavoring an Italian dish and there was a spark of "Oh hell - that's cool!" that people get about picking their own food, so I have hope of his tender indulgence and continued enthusiasm.
I am such a pussy when it comes to the cold. I freeze at 60! Lol, stay warm.
I hate winter but I've become inoculated against it. Too many years spent in Michigan in a poorly-insulated apartment with cheap windows and a non-functioning furnace kind of developed an ability to withstand the worst of the cold fairly easily.

My wife's cousin and his wife live in Bozeman, Montana and sleep outside every night. They have a large overhang over their back porch where the keep their normal king sized bed complete with electric blankets and down covers. I live in coastal California. What is this 'cold' you speak of? |
