If recent history is anything to judge by, they won't. They'll race even faster towards the lunatic fringe.
Will they change for the better, or are they in a death spiral? Stay tuned.

It's hard to face reality when you insist on living in an alternate reality.
My money is still on "we weren't conservative enough" or "we'd have won if Christie hadn't betrayed us."

THIS... I am so sick of people living in their own alternate realities, both politically and people I have personal relationships with. Can't we all just get on the same page and discuss things like grown-ups already?? Please? Life would be much easier.

They will marginalize the voices which tell them to be more inclusive. Exit polling indicated that "immigration reform" was a hot button issue with the redneck fringe.
From the FOX NEWS ( may as well play in the other guy's ball park) exit poll.

Also...70% of Atheists voted for Obama.

Actually there are just as many if not a growing more populaiton of "rednecks" that are socially liberal.
"Redbecks" are not always bigoted assholes. My friend from Colorado who was raised in Oklahoma while once Christian and once uber libertarian, changed and was an atheist libertarian when I met him but became an economic liberal after working for a cooporate sweat shop selling satilite tv.
So be careful with the word "redneck" because I can personally tell you they do not fit that stereotype. And my friend most certainly can point you out to famous country stars who are for Obama and do support diversity and want universal health care.
He broke my stereotype I grew up with. We all really are individuals beyond labels so it matters more to me how you treat others, not what label you claim.
Woodie Guthrie is one of the biggest examples I can think of because I am not a fan of country music. Woodie raged against the treatment of the poor during the great depression and dust bowl erra. He valued workers rights and wrote banjo music singing about the slave wage mentality of his time.
I have learned since knowing my friend for 7 years now, that steretypes are just that. Just like while I hate greed I know the difference between greed and wealth. Wealth by itself does no make one evil, abuse of power is.
So judge the individual, not the label.

Look at the map. Is every person who lives in Alabama a redneck asshole? No. But they are still the majority in those states.
If Romney was running for President of the Confederacy, he wins.

So judge the individual, not the label. I know who you are talking about, and I agree. It's even harder for social liberals who live surrounded by bible thumping conservatives idiots, the way he is surrounded. We should encourage the growth of liberalism in the south, even if it is slow, because if we can make headway there, the conservatives WILL be broken.

No, but for those types, Rick Perry is their leader.

Not originally anyway, but the confederacy did hijack the GOP.
