I have not read or intend to read this book series, however after speaking with people who are very widely read. They have concluded that Fifty Shades of Grey is fan fiction and not very written fan fiction (I don't automatically denigrate fan fiction) at that.

However you could say this is the first time fan fiction has become a serious contender for major national book award.
