Refuting Evolution

I know, but the squid example is cooler. Tongue Plus, much more obviously random and potentially harmful; if a squid swallows something larger than the hole in its brain- something it can do- then it's in for a world of brain damage.

Now, we just gotta wait for the nonsense handwaving from MS.

RE: Refuting Evolution
Ugg. So much fail.

Here's my question Mr scholar.

What do you think to gain by refuting evolution?

I mean, you're not going too, because your argument is simplistic and asinine. But let's suspend disbelief for a moment and pretend you'd found a problem with evolution which nobody here had ever heard of or could refute.

Let's further suspend disbelief and pretend that the scientific method demanded a full understanding of everything, allowed for no gaps and thus your refutation meant that the theory of evolution was thusly discarded (work with me here).

What would that gain you? That would leave the good folk here with one of several conclusions. The most logical would be "we don't know how humanity came to be". Then we go down through several alternative explanations through "ancient aliens" etc.

Allah comes pretty near the bottom, somewhere between "the Christian creation story" and "sneezed through the nostril of the great flying spaghetti monster (blessed be his noodly appendage)"

I don't understand why you'd make this argument! It makes as much sense as trying to convince me that you'd washed my car by proving that I DIDN'T wash my car. Even if you succeed, it doesn't move you forward!

There's but one reason why this argument is made - stupidity*. Even if MS is intelligent, he is limited in expression by the stupidity of his target audience like all creationists. Evolution removes creation from god, making it a target, and the ego of the simple minded easily rejects classification as a primate. The ol' "we don't comes from monkeys 'cause we's special" assumption.

*scientifically naïve.

But why post and run?! I mean even if he believed I creationism he surely doesn't believe that one or two posts are going to make someone say "by gum, he's right".

I've wondered a lot about this behavior. They don't actually listen to answers or converse rationally when they do stick around, either.

I wonder if the need to post such crap here has nothing to do with us. Maybe people like MS feel cracks in their belief, so they feel the need to shore it up by presenting the case ad nauseum, and then they feel better just seeing it all laid out in black and white in the enemy's camp?

I would say not. I don't think it's a sign of anything unusual. Some people engage hostile viewpoints, some people do not. Some do it intelligently, some do not. It's easy to speculate when we believe we are so clearly in the right, but what would we feel if others were to speculate about us, likewise?

For myself, I have a "line." fuck being right. Ya gotta be wrong to learn. Of course I don't admit to being wrong - that'd be crazy - but I always go away and reassess my position.

I suppose it depends on whether or not atheists/scientific-minded theists engage in this behavior on religious forums- posting a lot of stuff and running, or not engaging in conversation constructively. I don't feel the need to go to religious forums and try to instruct people or argue with them, or drive-by shoot them with info about anything.

If I DID engage in such behavior, I could expect some speculation about why I was doing it.

I am curious as to whether many atheists do this kind of thing at theistic forums?

A hypothesis, or speaking from experience there? Wink
