I often remind myself to stop comparing myself to others or my situation to theirs because we all do things different and it is OK.

Death and suffering is more bearable for those who attach meaning to it

Dealing with death is hard for anyone regardless of having a religion or not. Just having left religion myself recently I can't speak to how well I will deal with death when it presents itself, but the best advice I can give is on the same lines as everyone else. Just give yourself some time. Grieving is a process so don't expect it to get better overnight. Sometimes it may even feel like your taking steps backwards in the process, but don't loose hope. You're dealing with it just like anyone else would have to deal with it so don't beat yourself up.
Your memory of your friend? You're the only person in the world to remember that person that way. It's like being entrusted with a piece of someone's soul, and you're the only one who gets to carry that particular piece with you. I don't know if you find that comforting or not, but it's something.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.
