I always wondered about this part of the story. Given that a traditional Jewish wedding includes the bride and groom going off in a side room and consummating the marriage through a sheet with a hole in it (so the blood on the sheet will prove she was a virgin), you'd think that Mary and Joseph would have had sex when they first got married.
