Should I hide my atheism?
#71
RE: Should I hide my atheism?
No, I do not hide how I believe. I do keep what I feel towards myself, because my family knows me, and already knows how I feel, so constantly reminding them by picking a fight would be senseless. Perhaps I was overzealous by saying feel, or perhaps you know no discretion and believe that means say absolutely everything that comes into your head, which you are doing. However if you believe what you feel adds something to a conversation, then being a member in a social society should give you the courage to speak up. But if instead you choose to call your mother/father/brother/aunt/cousin a moron every time they speak, maybe you should keep it to yourself, it's common sense really.

Furthermore, the fact that everyone that I know already KNOWS that i'm athiest means that your last line is bullshit, at least as far as i'm concerned, and since you were responding to my post, I'll assume it was directed at me. But honestly the person who began the thread asked for advice, I gave it. There's no need to be an asshole, just don't be afraid. Because if you can't be honest with the people you care the most about, especially about your LIFE PHILOSOPHY, then perhaps you should really reconsider what you believe in the first place.

I'm not going to yell at my parents everytime they speak about church, that's just stupid. But everyone knows who I am, so I don't have to. I can continue elaborating on this if you haven't grasped it yet. Just let me know Smile
"In our youth, we lacked the maturity, the decency to create gods better than ourselves so that we might have something to aspire to. Instead we are left with a host of deities who were violent, narcissistic, vengeful bullies who reflected our own values. Our gods could have been anything we could imagine, and all we were capable of manifesting were gods who shared the worst of our natures."-Me

"Atheism leaves a man to sense, to philosophy, to natural piety, to laws, to reputation; all of which may be guides to an outward moral virtue, even if religion vanished; but religious superstition dismounts all these and erects an absolute monarchy in the minds of men." – Francis Bacon

I remain mostly anonymous on the webs because I'm afraid that certain people might google me and find out that I'm an atheist and write me off as an amoral baby eater or something. I know not hiring someone because of their religion or beliefs is against the law but I've read that there is still reason to hide your beliefs from the web if you expect to get hired in some places. I'm planning on getting into the US Air Force where my beliefs shouldn't be an issue.

Huh? Online is probably the best place to let your true feelings out. I thought you meant in real life. Unless you give your full name and address I doubt anyone can find you that easily. Even so you'd have to be pretty important or active for google to know who you are.
