what are we supposed to say again when christians ask us where we get our morality?

One's morality comes from one's self.

Allow me to elaborate on that.

Most normal people understand what it means to be hurt physically and/or emotionally. We tend to not like to be hurt.

Therefore, we tend to treat others the same way that we would like to be treated. We do not want to be hurt, and thus we do not hurt others.

That is morality. No god required.

but seems frequently christian people tell me that without god we are all douches and if it wasn't for god there would be no good in mankind - so what do we say again for that?

sometimes i feel like 99% of people are pretty mean and it feels pretty spiritual when someone is nice to me, but i dont agree that without Christianity people are bad cus i know lotta nice people who aren't Christians. and seems to me like people on christian forums are the most mean, they don't use bad words but the things they say are much more mean IMO

I say something like, "Have you read your bible and the character of your god? I suggest that you're likely a good, moral person DESPITE your religion"

It comes from the fact that, like it or not, we live in a society, and we have to govern our actions towards our fellow man accordingly. "The Golden Rule" is a good idea, not because it came out of Jesus' mouth, but because, simply put, if it's put into action, it works.

And, seriously, why do they think a morality solely based around the utterances of a higher power is a good idea? Especially when it can easily shift ideas of what's right and wrong based on its whims; it could easily, for instance, claim it's the right thing to kill your own innocent children. In fact, if the Bible is to be believed, it happened. Twice. And the second time, he didn't chicken out.

We are an evolved social intelligent creature. As a part of that we have inherited certain traits as advantageous to us. These include empathy, reciprocation and a basic sense of fairness.

That is all we needed to develop morality at a cultural level. It is why we see massive commonality of certain elements (like provisions against murder, theft and so on) alongside hugely dissimilar approaches to our treatment of outsiders (and who we group as outsiders).

From one society to another outsiders have included women, various religious groups, the disabled, homosexuals, conquered peoples, slaves.......

God and religion have had an essential role in getting us to bypass our innate morality. People behave badly from time to time but to really get them going off the deep end there is nothing we have ever found as successful and reliable as religion.

Always remember its almost impossible to get people to fly planes into buildings without it.

I cant help being sarcastic and tend to tell them I learnt everything I know about morals from Peter Sutcliffe, aka the Yorkshire Ripper. A man who killed prostitutes because the voice of god sent him on a mission to do so.

If that doesn't work I'll say I don't need the fear of hell or the reward of heaven to be nice and hope, if that's the case for them, they don't stop believing for all our sakes.

This tends to shut them up.
