"Offensive" Humor; there will be blood (or laughs)
June 17, 2014 at 12:22 pm
(This post was last modified: June 17, 2014 at 12:23 pm by Bob Kelso.)
A discussion thread.
What's "over the line" for you as far as humor goes? Now I don't mean the response that you don't find it funny, I mean humor that offends you, pisses you off. For me, there really isn't anything that comes to mind that offends me in the slightest, and I'm kind of curious as to why people get mad over a joke. People usually get offended over dead baby jokes, or anything to do with Hitler, but I find both funny for different reasons; dead baby jokes are good lowbrow humor for ridiculous, outrageous behavior, and Nazi jokes are usually just word play puns that I find clever and humorous.
Oh, and also post some off-brand humor if you'd like. This is the humor department after all.

The dead baby jokes r so over top to me that it's ludicrous not that it's funny, just not offensive.
Usually jokes about rape, I guess as a small female I just can't find that funny. It's something every woman (even if we don't say so) has worried about, and with the current political climate in America surrounding women's bodily autonomy, well...
Angry black woman jokes. Well jokes that play to negative stereotypes period. Just sigh.
Comedians who over use the n word. I don't if they're making a point, but just throwing out there just because is racist.

Rape jokes.
Holocaust jokes.
...that's probably about it for me.

I only recall getting POd once from a joke/cartoon. I wasn't 'out' at work (a defense contractor) and a cartoon circulated the office depicting sodomy and AIDS. This was probably around 1990, and at the time, I had already lost several friends to AIDS, and I was volunteering at an AIDS hospice at the time.
For what it's worth, some time later, my boss wanted me processed for a security clearance and I declined to participate. That was the most angry I ever saw her. I wasn't fired though.
To this day, I still find it very funny I was not given a security clearance because I COULD keep a secret.

My son is 18, and has a twisted sense of humor, so he's helped break me in a bit, with regards to some of the newer trending jokes. While I'm rolling my eyes at the awful dead baby jokes, he's laughing like crazy.
I will never find violence against women funny - ever!
But if the thread is titled "offensive", that should be fair warning.

I'm a member of a multiracial family. I don't like jokes that traffic in racial stereotypes very much.

So, Mrs. Lincoln, other than that little incident, how did you like the play?
I don't mind sick humor. It's my fav actually. But racially, sexually, politically ideologically, or religiously motivated sic humor bothers me. Don't ask me why, it does.
I loved the dead baby and mommy mommy jokes of the seventies.
Mommy, Mommy I don't want to go to Hawaii. Shut up and keep swimming.
Mommy, Mommy, I'm tired of walking in circles. Shut up or I'll nail the other foot down.
Mommy, Mommy, I hate Daddy's guts. Shut up and eat your spaghetti
Can you stand the dead baby jokes. Or the name jokes:
What do you call a paraplegic in the leaves? Russel

Here in melbourne , we have big TV campaigns about racism..,
A few months ago, a 12 year old girl was kicked out and banned from a televised football game because she called one of our indigenous athletes an "ape" ....
Whoa, thats gotta hurt!
What if she called him divine arsehole! Would that be OK?

This is a problem in the U.S. too. I know a professor who got in trouble for the word "niggardly" which has not entomological connection to the "n word" whatsoever. Nor was it used in a racist way. And that's just a drop in the bucket.

There was actually a US Congressman who was run through the ringer for the exact same "offense" in the 90s.
