Haha, just fuck with everyone trying to control it. I like that thinking.

You can basically create any scenario or map you like, put everything in the right place, rivers, resources, starting positions of civs. This is exactly what I was after, surprised I didn't look at it sooner. Definitely check it out if you haven't already.
I have used it, though I'm having a little difficulty deciding where to put everything when trying to make a map from scratch. I kind of want something that suits whatever civ I want to play as, but I kind of want it to look realistic too. I should probably just take an already made map, and maybe change some things here and there, instead of starting from scratch.

Took about 3/4 hours for me to make a map from scratch (large map). I'll probably end up tweaking it slightly, messing about with resource positions and such. I almost find the map creating as fun as actually playing
Now I just need to test this bad boy out.

I need some help.
So I've tried a few games on Epic speed now, and it's really bugging me how quickly science progresses (I looked up what it was like on Marathon and apparently this effect only becomes more apparent). On normal speeds it isn't much of an issue, because in these instances I actually want to play a game that's relatively fast paced and everything seems balanced. Production went at a decent rate without being too long or slow, and tech progression was the same. But on Epic speed, production is so painfully slow and yet, the science progression is comparatively whizzing by. So much so that I really think it's breaking the game. Like, I was playing one game, and I hadn't even met another civ yet but I'd got a message saying someone else had already reached the medieval era. WTF! I had like 4 units and barely any buildings. I only had two cities. The strange thing is, the cities themselves seem to actually grow quite fast. The tech progression is faster still. But the production? It takes like 20 turns just to produce a single fucking unit. If you want to build a wonder you can basically forget about building anything else for the next 30/40 turns, but in that time you'll have probably researched 4 different techs, rendering the wonder you're trying to build completely obsolete?
Argh.
This is really bugging the shit out of me.
Does anyone know of a mod or another way of making the science progression longer and the production faster. The only mods I've looked up seem to change things I don't want or just break the game in other ways. All I want is to play a relatively long game but not be punished by having ridiculously slow production. I wouldn't mind the production being as slow as it is but the way you beast though the different techs you're in the renaissance era before you even get chance to build the pyramids. It's so unbalanced it's stupid.

Hmm, I don't think I've played epic since getting the expansions. I remember being well advanced compared to real time having modern tech in the late 1800's early 1900's.

It's more that I just want to get an opportunity to experience each era to its fullest. On the longer settings, production seems to be the only thing that is actually longer. Which is funny because it's about the only damn thing I'd want to keep about the same speed as on normal settings. Culture, city growth and tech progression (especially tech progression) all go relatively fast.

If it's like the rest of the game, shouldn't you be able to edit the controlling python scripts to tweak research times? I'm assuming you are building production buildings as early as possible?
EDIT: Have you heard of this Civ 5 mod? SloMo Science sounds like what you are looking for.

I'm looking at editing the XML files and changing the actual values that it uses, seems like my best bet although I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what every line does and I don't want to break the game myself by editing something unnecessary.
Honestly, anything I do in-game doesn't make a difference, even if I used the map builder and put a shit load of stone hills around my city and had them focus on production it still goes slow compared to tech progression.

Yeah that was one of the ones I looked at, apparently it breaks other things in game like treaties so I want to avoid that.
*edit* I think editing the XML file is going to be how I change this, I found a few useful threads online that give me some idea of what each line does:

I'll end up just tweaking the options to suit my gameplay habits no doubt.

I am already salivating. Loved Alpha Centauri. My favorite Civ title.

I'm trying something new - playing as England, small map, starting in Ancient Era. Going to research towards Refrigeration as quickly as I can to get submarines early. Keep my head down and avoid conflict until I can achieve naval superiority and then go for the throat..
Subs vs. frigates is no contest.
