Also, the idea that respect is always demanded as a way of projecting power over a person is silly. I've known many, many people in life who command my respect not by dint of mere words, but the way that they comport themselves in the face of the vicissitudes of life.

I agree with you that some people abuse the word, but that doesn't invalidate the word itself. Many people abuse opiates, too, but they still have a legitimate place in ameliorating pain.
