Well, it's hard to explain his faith. We just moved in 4 weeks ago and he refuses to eat anything that's not halal, yet he hasn't prayed once ever since we moved so that's a bit confusing. I pretty much just let him be but we're good together, usual couple squabbles but nothing ice cream can't fix lol

We've talked about his faith before though and we just agreed to let each other be and if one doesn't like what the other says or does, we just sit down and talk about it. We've been together almost 6 years so it's not like we don't have an understanding of what we've gotten ourselves into.

Well hey, if you can make it work and you're both happy in the relationship then more power to ya.

If he's the one with the dietary restrictions, why not make him do the grocery shopping? He gets what he wants (halal food), you get to not bother with the headache of label-reading.

Problem solved.

Nothing wrong with dating a Muslim. I dated a Muslim woman from Indonesia for years. Dating is probably the wrong word as we almost got married. The only problems I had were daytime sex and eating during Ramadan.

There are so many horror stories told about this scenario.

There is a story every other week here in the UK about this, a week or two ago a 'moderate' Muslim got angry because his wife and daughter rejected Islam. Decided to shoot them both.

I suppose you could argue that he didn't try to stone/behead them, progress of a sort ?

Women going to visit their Muslim boyfriends home country, perhaps he invites you to travel to meet his family, and being unable to leave. Or kidknapping their children and traveling to the middle East to Islamise them.

There was a horrible honour crime a year or two back in the UK that stuck with me, where the young Muslim man was ordered by his family to kill his lover. He threw her in the canal, and as she tried to pull herself out he stuck a claw hammer into her head.

You couldn't be unaware of these things, his believes in a religion that if followed means he owns you and has the right to beat/kill/rape you.

In the end its up to you, but be careful.

For the most part, I don't mind his religion, I just find some things annoying. Like when I go shopping and have to check every label for ingredients and then if I get something wrong, he'll refuse to eat it. Small stuff that I've never really thought of before but now I always have to keep in mind, since we just moved in together 4 weeks ago. Other than that we're pretty much fine with each other.

There are fundamentalist assholes of every religious belief system. Not every Muslim wants to destroy Isreal just like not every Christian wants to bomb abortion clinics. I mean, hell, my boyfriend was Mormon when we started dating (he's since kinda converted, but I never really tried to convert him, if that makes any sense).

If you're happy and he isn't being a domineering jerk, go with it. Just make sure you have an out in case things do turn bad. That isn't just a good idea for dating a Muslim, but a general good idea any time you take a big step in the relationship, and, yes, moving in together does count as a big step. Without an out, you could both be stuck together, not because you want to be together, but because you don't have a back-up plan on where to live or a support system in place.

What about combining the two?

One possible problem is, that he may become more fundamentalist without warning.

If marriage and children are in your future, do some research on the hundreds of Muslim men that take their kids back to a Muslim country and don't allow their 'infidel' wives to ever see them again.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Gotta eat halal but he can live with (and I'm assuming) have sex with a girlfriend before marriage?

The cognitive dissonance of that would make me slowly hate him.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
