left a bit, right a bit, fire..
I don't really do politics, apart from local politics where local MPs (in the UK) can make big differences to peoples' lives.
But mainstream politics has always left me feeling unfulfilled.

I don't consider myself left or right wing (although others would be able to pigeon hole me I suspect), I don't follow a party or a club or a doctrine, I just believe what I believe and usually I can find what I want in many different parties, even alleged extreme ones.

So my point, let's take the recent horrific Islamist attack in an Aussie café. It's clearly wrong to take and kill hostages. It's clearly done in the name of a religion. So what's with the hashtag #illridewithyou?

Seems like the victims of this atrocity has become muslims, and not the two members of staff that died, and the other folk caught up in the horrible event.

My question is what is "the left" and why does it make excuses for such actions?

I'm not familiar with hash-tagging, or at least, I'm not familiar with any hash-tag meanings. But then I never really found a reason to get into twitter; nobody is interesting enough for me to want to have to keep up-to-date on their lives obsessively.

More to do with who the victim is? rather than hashtag awareness if I'm honest.

All of these media manufactured stories are engineered to keep the population under control using fear. The perpetrator was Islamic no doubt, but obviously mentally unstable and vulnerable. An Islamic backlash is to be squashed by any normal right thinking person.

What an interesting reply... mentally unstable vs true believer? Now that's fuel for a thread

You place far too much value on "normal" thinking, Frodz. It's normal in American society, for example, AND right-thinking too, to see guns and violence and murder as an every-day thing available to virtually all audiences, and bare titties and asses as something shameful and to be hidden and viewed with disdain.

But anyway, I think I'm missing something. Dude took some hostages and killed them, he was a muslim...and...his victims were, too?...

Also, the more truthful someone becomes about believing things without basis, the more mentally unstable they are, you'll notice.

Yeah, I'm fuzzy on the details, too. What I'm gathering is that there was some anti-Muslim reaction to the terrorist, and then a pro-Muslim reaction to that that ends up looking like people are siding with the terrorist?
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:

"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."

For context, this is the previous verse:

"Hi Jesus" -robvalue

Yes, I think that's correct.

The point of the #hashtag seems to be "listen, just because one muslim was a terrorist, we don't think you're all terrorists."

It's a complicated issue. It's really difficult to walk the fine line between, on one hand, acknowledging that, sure, extremely peaceful and kind and innocent and good people who are muslims might suffer some (additional) prejudice and injury and retaliation because of this extremist and, on the other hand, remembering that innocent people were literally trapped and shot, and that's a huge effing travesty.

I don't know where the hashtag originated or if there was an anti-muslim backlash in Australia or elsewhere due to this incident. At least to me, it seemed that a lot of people jumped on this hashtag movement pretty quickly because, hey, it's really easy to put a hashtag, but the quickness with which it happened seemed like people were rushing to the defense of innocent muslims everywhere, who may or may not face repercussions because of this guy's action, without properly recognizing the innocent people who died. Seemed kind of insensitive to some, I think.

Don't worry, my friend.  If this be the end, then so shall it be.

'The left' encompasses a large conglomeration of people with a wide variety of beliefs, most of which certainly wouldn't make excuses for terrorism. Really despite what some right wing media likes to portray, that is an extremely small percentage of liberal thinkers. I'd also note that lots of prominent libertarians also make the identical excuses although for different reasons perhaps, so it's not exactly a right/left issue.
