Vatican schmatican. The rally cry of Christian conservatives around the world would lead to a counter attack, which would in turn lead to a counter-counter-attack and so on until a it's full-on armed conflict.
News Flash: Christian Conservatives don't like Catholics. There are pretty regular predictions about the new Pope being the Antichrist (John Paul II got that a lot as well). I don't see an attack on the Vatican being greeted with a whole lot of outrage by the Religious Right.
No, if you want to enlist the Religious Reich in a holy war, you'll need to attack something they truly hold sacred. Like Chick-fil-A, or Home Depot.

So are quite a few American neo-cons I'm sure.

The don't like Catholics until Catholics are under attack from brown Muslims. Nothing unites a fractured ideology like being assaulted by another fractured ideology.

From the article in the OP:
Quote:Iraq's ambassador to the Holy See, Habib Al Sadr, at the time warned that "what has been declared by the self-declared Islamic State is clear. They want to kill the Pope. The threats against the Pope are credible."
The Iraqi ambassador was the source of the information back in September. This was when ISIS was having its way in Iraq. Sounds more like subterfuge with the goal of trying to get on the exterminator's schedule.

Then what? What does the semi-homogeneous "west" do about it?
They are already a very naughty group indeed and not exactly on everyone's XMAS card list.
Vatican City is a sovereign nation, and as Davka points out they have no useful military forces of their own. Their formal neutrality means that they have no security treaty with any other nation, either. They'd have to ask another country to undertake the war on the Vatican's behalf. Italy could perhaps be pushed into that position, because by treaty Italy is supposed to treat an attack on the Pope as an attack on the Italian king, but that's a little bit of a stretch.
I imagine us Americans would be easy to sway into another foreign adventure, unfortunately.
Wouldn't they just do what they have done before and call all good Christians to join in a Holy Crusade?

I don't see millions flocking to a worldwide Crusade as credible, myself.

I don't either. But the thought of millions of Central and South Americans pouring over the borders of the Middle East to kick some righteous ass is fun to fantasize over.
