That was definitely real, was it some other kind of magic? The only difference between the gods of this world and the gods of GRRM's world is that eventually, GRRM will have to reveal them. Whether they are real or fake, GRRM will eventually finish his books and his universe will become complete. We shall see what he says about his gods in time.
I think the gods in ASOIAF are not real, but magic and dark arts are. Beric Dondarrion and Lady Stoneheart are resurrected by Thoros of Myr through the dark arts.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

I think that, just like in our world, people use the gods to their advantage (hoping to gain power or influence). The main difference is that in ASOIAF, they have magic to convince more people.
That makes a lot more sense, i mean if R'hllor is real and has the power of resurrection then Stannis's army would crush everyone with ease and that doesn't make for much of an interesting story does it?
“The larger the group, the more toxic, the more of your beauty as an individual you have to surrender for the sake of group thought. And when you suspend your individual beauty you also give up a lot of your humanity. You will do things in the name of a group that you would never do on your own. Injuring, hurting, killing, drinking are all part of it, because you've lost your identity, because you now owe your allegiance to this thing that's bigger than you are and that controls you.” - George Carlin

Nope, that is just an army of the immortal coming straight for you. |
