I like them all too. I think it's funny because it goes to show how deceitful people in the government can be.

Yep, add in Arya, and you have my favorite characters as well!

I'm also a fan of Sam, but that's partly because he took so much crap from fans of the show.  In the books, I always felt Sam was a much more sympathetic character.  A fat bibliophile who's father basically disowned him and sent him off to die so his more athletic younger brother could get the inheritance.  I think it just doesn't translate as well to the movie, same problem Jon,Sansa and Stannis are having.  Well, the writers for the TV show are changing all of them so they will be more suited to TV, so I hope the Sam hate will stop.

Arya.... arya... arya... I don't know... sometimes, I agree she does feel brainiac.... other times, she's just clueless.
As for Sam, he is knowledgeable, but, at most, he uses it to get Jon elected as lord commander...

There was a great anti-religion moment in the last episode aswell where the High Sparrow says to Cersei, "may the gods judge him justly".... smash cut to his followers smashing up the marketplace and rounding up gay people
“The larger the group, the more toxic, the more of your beauty as an individual you have to surrender for the sake of group thought. And when you suspend your individual beauty you also give up a lot of your humanity. You will do things in the name of a group that you would never do on your own. Injuring, hurting, killing, drinking are all part of it, because you've lost your identity, because you now owe your allegiance to this thing that's bigger than you are and that controls you.”  - George Carlin

That's true too.  It's funny because you can somewhat tell through the books and the small parts of the show what GRRM thinks about religion.  Hell, he basically admitted that he was an atheist in an interview.

Quote:I suppose I'm a lapsed Catholic. You would consider me an atheist or agnostic. I find religion and spirituality fascinating. I would like to believe this isn't the end and there's something more, but I can't convince the rational part of me that makes any sense whatsoever.

Petyr Baelish is by far my favorite in the series. In the books, it's Arya.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

I always got the impression from the books that he was an atheist aswell, but i tend to assume that people i like share my opinions for some reason. It seems like he views the various gods and people that follow them as being tribal in nature and that requires a perspective on religion not many believers have. I don't remember the Faith Militant (great name) being as aggressive in the books as they are in the show though but maybe i'm mis-remembering

That moment in the last episode was so great because it shows how easily beliefs can become an excuse to condemn and punish those that don't share them - and they have such a benign, humble, Jesus-like leader aswell

I recall reading a question on the ASOIAF subreddit about a Q&A with GRRM.

Someone asked him if the Gods in ASOIAF were real, in their universe. And his response was something like "About as real as the gods of our universe".

But what about R'hllor resurrecting that guy in that cave whose name I can't remember? That was definitely real, was it some other kind of magic?
