Randys line of reasoning seems to be that only thing holding Christians in check from a bloody rampage is their fear of something that does not exist.

This worries me.

A theist that doesn't understand survival of the fittest. Who would have thought it possible?


Different organisms have different survival strategies that make them fit for survival.

Cheetahs can run fast, wolves hunt in packs, snails lay millions of eggs, great apes (bonobos, humans, chimps) survive by altruism, cooperation, reciprocity. 

Being the meanest, strongest, selfish bastard works great for tigers,  not so much humans. 

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

The problem with any question that begins, "Without God..." is the suggestion/assumption that this would actually be a change. Since no God has been demonstrated at all, certainly not one that is actually doing anything, there's no reason to think "Without God" refers to anything different than the reality we know and love.

I would hope religious theists who are honest enough would admit there's a chance they may be mistaken, and that in fact they are worshipping nothing at all. Or something totally unlike what they think they're worshipping. So clearly the belief that some hidden entity is going to punish you is enough, whether or not it actually exists. Just like if someone tells you a sniper has you in their sights so to do what they say, if you believe there is the sniper, it doesn't matter if there actually is one or not.

Since there are contradictory God claims, with people all saying they get their morality from their God, a lot of people are going to be worshipping nothing / the wrong God and still somehow getting their morality. It seems pretty clear that the idea morality comes from religion is just part of the indoctrination.
