The fundamental stupidity about that global discussion over raising the retirement age is, that companies simply don't recruit senior citizens or they try to get rid of them. Too expensive compared to the usual pitance they're willing to pay.
It's a smoke screen since these people go straight for the unemployment line.

Most (?) private plans offer differing retirement age options v/ payout, I wouldn't mind have options with SS too.
They would have to be 'actuarially sound' (whatever that means) options, from my viewpoint.
Curious admission:
I don't have a problem with means testing, although if they did it I would most likely have a loss of benefits. I'm not thrilled with pensioners pissing away their SS checks at the casino, but that is a different thread . . . .

You must be looking at the wrong people. I remember my grandparents, and they were mentally sharp pretty much to the end. The three who made it to their eighties were more alive at 80 than quite a few people are ever. Also, they were physically in decent shape, very good for their age.
As for gambling, every time I have visited a casino (which has been only a few times, and never something I particularly wanted to do), the stares are generally vacant for those at the slot machines, no matter what the age of the idiots wasting their money. I find the experience of visiting a casino revolting on multiple levels.
One more thing: My grandparents never gambled, as far as I know.
