You want special treatment for having personal beliefs? Sorry, not how businesses work. You don't meet the criteria, you're not hired. The end.
But, monkey poo, if the job's 'requirements' conflict with the discrimation laws, it does not matter how 'common sense' you seem to think the job requirements are, you and that business are operating outside the law.
Side note: If creating job requirements that infringe upon a persons religious freedoms is ok, and to you it is a matter of 'common sense' that one does not hire a person because a company can 'top shelf'/Keep a religious person from ever holding a job because of legitmate religious observances, then know this Law was made to correct people who practice bigoted behavior like you and all those who think like you...
That is again unless you Christian and are being discriminated against.

HAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHH! Oh Drich, wait until oil runs out and your feeble country has to spend in some bills like we reasonable humans have to. The US have always remained the opportunist country in our History. The biggest wars fought were saved by the stalwart brave americans that entered late or when their asses were being fucked.
I live in a shithole of a country, but proud to be in one that tries hard to live by, without aircraft carriers, nuclear weapons and the whole shebang, to make a christian way of life to endure while others starve.
So full of unbridled sense of entitlement. You poor saps, you will die like everyone else and your life will amount to damn shit. Be happy dying old chap, I shall wait for you in hell.

I don't know why you're bringing up American law, since the OP is British. And personally I think any business owner should be able to refuse to hire anybody on any basis. But that's not the case here.
Let me repeat it one last time. It's very simple.
This job requires working on Sundays.
She says she doesn't want to/won't work on Sundays.
Ergo, she doesn't meet the requirement and is not hired.
That's it. No religious persecution here. If you hold the belief that working on a Sunday is wrong and think it's a higher priority than having a job, it's your problem. In case you missed it, there are Muslims working there and none of them have any problems with not having a sacred day off. Tough tits.

Aren't true muslims required to put ass up face down 5 times a day?
How do they work that out?

Just to clarify to further correct drich's continued misrepresentation of the OP, this is nothing to do with the U.S., and indeed there is no legal grounds for citing discrimination based on religious grounds in either EU/UK based on the information thus presented. There is no grand conspiracy aginast hiring christians (several of the cleaning staff are christians, as well as Muslims, some Hindus and a Sikh).
I know nobody is listening to him anyway which is nice to know, but just in case ^_^

The problem is solved with a diversity in it's hiring practices. Meaning hire people who's holy days are Saturday and Sunday, along with the heathens who can 'float.' a day off. Not to mention it is unrealistic to expect to hire a person and never give them a day off. What is the big deal whether a person has a week day or week end day off? (When one hires from a more diverse group of people, rather than just one type or religious group?) They didn't turn her down because she was a Christian; they turned her down because she would not be available on Sunday. If she had stipulated that she would not work on Sunday for any other reason, she would still have been turned down. If they are forced to hire her under those circumstances, then the law would be favoring Christians for no other reason than that they are Christians.
If they hire more cleaning people who refuse to work Sundays for other reasons, then they would be discriminating against the Christian lady. By all means, keep track of their hiring practices and slam them if they do that. Barring that, they're not being hypocritical by refusing to offer her work, and it's certainly not a sign of mismanagement to try and keep morale up among the workforce!
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Actually that is the case and my argument lest you forget. The OP is indeed able to not hire a Christian based on the prejudice he may have against the legitmate practices of that religion and that in His backwards monkey society is ok.

You don't seem to understand the argument monkey man... In a good and decent Human society their are laws that tell companies who want to strip an indivisual of any right he or she may have to be different than every other drone that they are not allowed to discriminate against people due to their race, Religion, or gender. In this case discrimination would include an unrealistic demand for a worker to work on a holy day when in fact it is not the companies expectation that any of it's workers be made to work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. (as their is a max of 48 hours work week in the UK) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_labour_law
to say 8 of those hours must be spent on a Sunday out of a 168 hour week is intentionaly targeting Christians.
That's how we do it in 'Merica. (and that is how it is supposed to be done in the UK as well https://www.gov.uk/discrimination-your-r...on-at-work ) But in a monkey society where the mob rules/Pop culture is king. Christianity has fallen out of fashion. In fact in that part of the world it has become fashionable to hate anything Christian. Therefore it IS Indeed OK For the OP and His country to discriminate against religious people. Particually Christians.

Again in the US and in the UK according to the Laws of Man it is discrimination.. but in your monkey/pop culture society, the OP is a 'hero' for not hiring the Christian.
3. Discrimination at work
The law protects you against discrimination at work, including:
dismissal
employment terms and conditions
pay and benefits
promotion and transfer opportunities
training
recruitment
redundancy
Some forms of discrimination are only allowed if they’re needed for the way the organisation works, eg:
a Roman Catholic school restricting applications for admission of pupils to Catholics only
employing only women in a health centre for Muslim women
ooops I guess you didn't bother looking up the laws in the OP's country either..

Religions are made by man, I could invent a religion tomorrow that says it's immoral to work at any other times than between 11:47am and 12:12pm on February 29th, your argument is silly

How the hell does this have anything to do with Socialism? Would a more Capitalist state let people work whenever they choose?
“The larger the group, the more toxic, the more of your beauty as an individual you have to surrender for the sake of group thought. And when you suspend your individual beauty you also give up a lot of your humanity. You will do things in the name of a group that you would never do on your own. Injuring, hurting, killing, drinking are all part of it, because you've lost your identity, because you now owe your allegiance to this thing that's bigger than you are and that controls you.” - George Carlin
