Should prostitution be legal?

RE: Should prostitution be legal?
Well I live in a low income neighborhood and I see prostitutes have a very dangerous job sometimes they end up dead. From my point of view it should be legal so that way prostitutes can afford security and a private building to conduct business in.
Live every day as if already dead, that way you're not disappointed when you are. Big Grin

There are prostitues at every level - You are talking about street walkers - Its a big problem - I only use agency girls but if Streetwaking was legal then they could all get together in one area with some hired protection , preferably near a motel

Just a thought . Do you think prostition is a decent career path , one perhaps children could aspire to for when they become adults , or perhaps the careers advisor could suggest it when they leave school?( if they didn't get great grades for example). Perhaps both mum and dad are prostitutes and they want to follow in thier footsteps?
I am all for de-criminalisation where the prostituteisconcerned , but i just think legalising it will make a seedy , mentally damaging (for some)job socially acceptable. I just can't see that ever being a good thing .
Yes i am obviously completely sexually repressed , as im not to keen on porn either ( especially its accessibility to chidren of all ages).

That kinda depends on what kind of prostitution you mean. Some of them just get you off and move on and others are companions and nearly a girlfriend. The girlfriend one can be more of a long term choice for a girl, provided she's going to put effort into it and try to look nice. The ones you just get on to get off, though, I see that being more along similar lines as 'stripper' is nowadays: most girls won't do it, but some will and some of them will use it to do more in the sex work, others will use it to finance school or get themselves through a rough patch.

Do you think being a bin man is a decent career path? How about a janitor? Or working in a fast food restaurant?

What bloody difference does this make?

And you base this thought on actual evidence or just a gut feeling?

Argument from incredulity much?

Yeah, does sound like you've just got an irrational problem with sex.

I know for a fact that two of the Girls I see are going to college right now and one is going to become a Dental Surgeon . Its a way to make a large amount of money in a very short time.

Added to that its a gateway job. There are those who are funding tuition, there are those who are using it to find a guy to marry (there are tons of girls who marry their regular) there are those who will stay in the business past 35 as Managers and there are those who save their money to buy themselves another business (motels, rental apartment blocks, nightclubs and Bars are a traditional investment).

Now of course there is the street level prostitution. Girls don't chose that life they go into it because they are already desperate and normally its about drugs but if they weren't whoring they would be stealing so its a more honest way to make a living. Others are trying to make ends meet because some loser guy has left her with a couple of kids and doesn't pay any maintainence-better to let the kids starve huh?

Prostitution should be more acceptable. Its an honest way to make a living.

Those jobs are essential and i don't see any comparison.

Not gut feeling , just what i have read though.Aside from the physical problems , emotional scars like 'Feeling dead inside during the act' , 'losing touch with your own intimacy and sense of erotism' , percieving sex as routine and mechanical , numbness to the physical and emotional sensations , difficulty maintaining loving relationships and basically , not enjoying sex anymore .

Not an argument , an opinion.

Essential?

Working in a fast food chain is essential?

Okay maybe a lot of Americans need their daily serving of Big Macs but being a burger flipper is certainly not an essential job.

Besides, how do you define essential?

I used those particular jobs to try and make a point. That it's nothing to do with what you consider 'a good career choice'. Some don't have the skills to do better paid more 'reputable' jobs, some people are just suited to that kind of work, and some people do it even though it's not actually their chosen career path at all, but rather a part time/full time employment that gives them money when their natural career choice is not viable for whatever reason. I mean, I'm pretty sure the percentage of us that actually get to do our chosen career choice in life is far smaller than those who don't get that chance.

The essentialness of any job doesn't determine whether it's a 'good' career choice, and regardless of whether you think it is or not, who are you to tell people what they should do for a living?

And I've read that every prostitute in the world loves their job. Does this mean I'm right?

(Note, I haven't actually read that, but I'm just trying to make a point, what you may or may not have read doesn't make it correct)

Quote:Not an argument , an opinion.

An opinion is just as guilty as an argument of committing a fallacy.

It's semantics.

Not really why I said that, although it was a contributing factor.

I do consider being against legalising prostitution to be an irrational position. Considering you're against it (which I think is irrational), and you're also not a big fan of porn, it does seem to suggest you perhaps have an irrational problem with sex.

Or is that too much of a conclusion to make? Well, let's just call it a hunch.
