Civ 5

The Terra map looks pretty cool and the kind of map I'd like to play, but I don't like the idea of all the factions starting on one side of the world. The Earth map would just annoy the OCD in me because the factions would all be in the wrong place compared to the real Earth. Continents seems okay but the land masses seem a little plain. Small continents? I like the idea but I'm not sure if they'd be too small. Pangaea, definitely not. Archipelago? I like navy battles but I'm not sure I like the idea of it being the be all and end all of the game.

Hmmm, decisions, decisions....

Small continents are fun. Lots of naval action, but there's also room for land warfare if that's your cuppa joe.

I'll probably end up giving that a go on a large map. Huge will probably be a bit too big right?

In my view, map size really comes down to how long of a game you want to play.

That's probably the biggest part a large map plays. Length. You will presumably not get into as much conflict over space and resources, especially if you set resources high. I started putting them at abundant. I'm not sure how legendary start and strategic balance work.

Yeah I guess you're right. I'll have the time set on Epic so I would like to play a bit of a longer game.

And I do the same generally, I should really read the wiki more and find out about those.

*edit* So I looked it up and Legendary start makes it so that you have a lot of luxury resources near the capital city, making the start of the game go much faster. Strategic balance I'm still not really sure on, but from what I can gather you get a select few resources and your rivals get different ones near their capitals. Better for trading maybe? I dunno.

Thanks for looking it up. I do imagines that strategic balance may make the resources spawn in groups where you'd have some, and other civs would have others. Instead of being random. Plu maybe Rome and Japan start out with more iron for sword units, but other civs might start with more horses if they have special horse units.

Do many of you guys know about the map builder? I just started using it AND IT IS FUCKING EPIC. You can basically create any scenario or map you like, put everything in the right place, rivers, resources, starting positions of civs. This is exactly what I was after, surprised I didn't look at it sooner. Definitely check it out if you haven't already.

A true sadist would put all of the strategic resources on otherwise shitty land on islands in the middle of the map, far far away from the starting spots.

That could make for a pretty epic game. All the Civ's fighting for the middle and the resources there.

Or, one can play the contrarian position and load up on units that don't need resources. One could wreak havoc on such a map with a fleet of subs. Landing a bunch of infantry and artillery would be messy, though.
