I had a friend who would spank her kid at the drop of a hat. It was to the point that the kid would start screaming and crying before her mom even approached her for the spanking. It was habitual and routine. I've always felt The Look was much more effective. Worked on me like a charm. I was jumping of garages and playing pickup tackle football games; physical pain wasn't much of a worry to my 8 year old self. Disappointing my mother and father, on the other hand, I couldn't handle.
ETA: Which isn't to say I'm completely against spanking, or judging that method. It's just never been my thang.
Yeah, my son never needed much spanking, in part thanks to The Look. He knew that that was his warning. But while spanking can be useful, its utility is limited, and especially after six or seven years old -- at that point, revocation of privileges accompanied by a discussion always seemed to work better.
