YEAH, my brother did this to me. I refused to be confirmed in my belief in Christ. It hurt my folks. He was confirmed. They felt better. We are both atheists. He was when he was confirmed.
We had a secular funeral for my Dad in January. It was my brother's idea. He needed help uninviting Mom who would have been hurt. I helped convince her to stay home. My bad. I should have just outed brother at a less emotional time years earlier. I love my brother. I love my Mom. I'm pretty sure my father wasn't Christian when he died. (Yes my parents had been divorced a couple decades.) And yes our secular funeral was all about his life in a way that most Christian funerals are not.
The thing is that there are many more of us atheists, and those that soften it by calling themselves agnostic, than say so. The more of us say so, the more of us there will be.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
