What does 'protect Moses from his glorious presence' mean?
Please excuse my ignorance.
Sinful man would die if they saw God face to face in all His glory, the sight of a perfect being would be more than we could stand. The place allowed God to protect him from seeing His face, maybe you should read the scriptures and try to find things out, like any intelligent person who wants to know would do.

He told Moses to stand in an indention in a rock. How did the rock protect him? Is god's face more amazing than his back because he let Moses see his back. Again, if Moses could see god anyway, how did standing in a rock help?
Vic is right. The verse does say that Moses also spoke to god, face to face. Do you have an alternative meaning for the phrase, face to face?
