Ahem, small bone to pick and certainly don't want to derail the thread. Robert Smith's career didn't wind down. He abruptly retired in his prime after his best season as a pro (1500 yards rushing/5 consecutive 1000+) to pursue a medical career. This is the same Robert Smith that sat out a year at Ohio State stating that the team didn't allow enough time to concentrate on academics in pre-med.
Smith finished with almost 7,000 yards. It's very conceivable that had he continued playing that he would have rushed for 5,000 more (barring injury of course) which would have placed him in the top 20 all time.
More to the topic at hand, I think the difference is that Robert Smith wasn't 'out' as an atheist until some years after his career.
