Yes, I think conditioning is why it still exists, and the safety blanket part is why people stay. It's a sticky combination.

Relapsing into religion would always happen when I was emotionally weak. The brainwashing residue would also kick in. But reason wouldn't really do it for me, because the appeal belief had was emotional. I had to realize I'm not a 10yo anymore and I don't need to hide under the blanket to let go of it.
